SNES.
I liked Nintendo's exclusive games way more than I liked Sega's. Though I did eventually get a Genesis pretty much just for Sonic.
Also, I was able to fully enjoy the Street Fighter games on my SNES without having to buy anything extra.

As always, Nintendo's first party games were second to none. Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Link To The Past, Super Metroid, etc,.... all standout games. Stuff like Contra III, Mega Man X, and Super Castlevania all gave the SNES a HELL Of an advantage.
However, Genesis had Sonic... which was absolutely amazing back in the day. Toejam And Earl is still on my top 10 games of all time. The 32X version of Doom captured my life for months until the PS1 was released and I got the remastered version. Plus the Genesis versions of WWF games always seemed to draw my attention more. That version of Super Wrestlemania had a different roster and actually had finishers.... and I will always prefer the Genesis version of Royal Rumble because it had the only correct version of Undertaker's theme on a console (crappy quality, but accurate...it wasn't just the death march played over and over like on SNES).... plus, IRS's write-off clothesline is still one of the coolest looking finishers in those 16-bit times.
In the end, it's close. Honestly, I'd have to give the edge to the SNES.... but Genesis just BARELY loses out. BARELY.

The Genesis has some REALLY great games (Sonic, Ristar, Beyond Oasis, etc...) but the SNES library is a million times better.

SNES for me. Hell I still play it and collect games for mine to this day. Super Mario Bros All-Stars gave me every Mario game to date, Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2 were always a blast to play, and then of course Super Punch Out to top it all off and that sums up a good portion of my childhood. Then along came the N64....But I'm going to assume that'll be another thread for another day.

Mega Drive was the first console I ever had.
And supposedly, it does what Nintendon't.

I owned both and still play both to this day (just beat DKC again for the 1000000th time) but I think I'm going to have to go with Genesis.

My sarcastic Mega Drive referencing answer aside, I think one big reason why I've always felt more reason to side with Sega is that throughout that era - and to the present day, really - Nintendo basically treated Europe like an afterthought, while Sega treated us as a valued region, releasing big titles near simultaneously with their US and Japan release, as well as creating things like Fleetway's Sonic The Comic, etc.
To illustrate this: Super Mario World was released in Japan on November 21st, 1990. It made it to Europe on April 11th, 1992. 17 months later. Sonic 1 was released on June 23rd, 1991 in Europe... 3 days BEFORE Japan.

I loved both, but I slightly prefered the Genesis's library. Also, Sonic loyalty might play a factor.
(Admittedly, a lot of that loyalty is SatAM related, but whatevs.)

Sonic 1 was released on June 23rd, 1991 in Europe... 3 days BEFORE Japan. I think that had as much to do with Nintendo and Sega's sales in those regions. Sega had a strong market share in the EU, while Nintendo were utterly dominant in Japan. It made sense that the respective regions were given preference on releases. That said, it was a bitter pill to swallow as a kid knowing SNES games were usually released so much later over here than in Japan and the US. It also blows my mind Super Mario World predates the first Sonic game.

Asked my dad for a Genesis for my birthday.
He botched and came home with a Super NES.
Greatest screw up ever. Seriously dad, you're the best!

When I was dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this.

Although I did have the Sega Channel at one point back when that was a thing.

Nintendo pretty didn't much didn't give a f*** about anyone outside of America or Japan where Sega did. In AUS/NZ They pretty much stopped trying when they realized the NES wasn't going to outsell the Master System.

Owned both, SNES all the way. Genesis sound was horrible and ear-grating (especially in hindsight).

Genesis has the Sonic games, Zero Tolerance, Vectorman, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, and Sid Meier's Pirates.
I take the Genesis.

Genesis, but barely. My favorite game (FFVI) is on SNES. I am not a huge platformer fan so some of the SNES advantages drop a bit. The Genesis had the fantastic Shinning Force series, of which, the SNES didn't offer a great competitor. The sports games all played faster and better on Genesis. Genesis had Mutant League Football and Hockey. It also had the Streets of Rage series, which I prefer to all of the Final Fight games.
I am happy to see this poll so close as it is. To a lot of people, the Genesis seems like an afterthought, when in reality, it was a great system. The SNES is awesome as well.

I slightly regret getting rid of my Genesis, granted I never had a ton of games for it, but there were some that were awesome.
