I had the SNES, but don't hate Genesis.

Super Nintendo was good if you liked RPGs and Mario World.
Genesis I felt had a better verity, specially with their sports games.

It changed as time passed.
Sure, when I was younger, it was all about the SNES being the Square and Enix machine.
Now, when I'm older and don't want to put the time into older Square and/or Enix JRPGs anymore, I lean far more towards the Genesis.

My sarcastic Mega Drive referencing answer aside, I think one big reason why I've always felt more reason to side with Sega is that throughout that era - and to the present day, really - Nintendo basically treated Europe like an afterthought, while Sega treated us as a valued region, releasing big titles near simultaneously with their US and Japan release, as well as creating things like Fleetway's Sonic The Comic, etc. To illustrate this: Super Mario World was released in Japan on November 21st, 1990. It made it to Europe on April 11th, 1992. 17 months later. Sonic 1 was released on June 23rd, 1991 in Europe... 3 days BEFORE Japan. To make matters worse none of the good SNES RPGs made it here so that's no FF6, Chrono Trigger or Mario RPG, Earthbound didn't make it to these shores until this year. Then many games that did make it suffered from poor PAL conversions. I always find it baffling whenever a European says they prefer the Nintendo of old to today's company (the N64 days weren't much better). So yeah the Megadrive wins this poll by default but I'd take the Amiga over either of them.

SNES was my first console, like many of you, so that's my choice. But, I did buy a Genesis later and do appreciate the many fantastic games that came out for it.

I had both, but other than the Sonic games, everything on the Genesis felt so cheaply made by comparison. Even the controller felt more like a plastic toy. To me, the only reason to have a Genesis was that the Sonic games weren't on SNES.
I never really understood as a kid back then how anyone could like the Genesis better. It always seemed to me like the kids that were more into it were into sports games, which outside of wrestling games, I never touched.

I'm dead serious, I don't even know a person who owned a genesis. Everyone I knew growing up had the SNES

Shaq Fu was also on Genesis. See, I thought it was SNES exclusive since I never knew it was on Genesis.

Most people I knew had both. If they just had one they had the Genesis. I think part of that is because the Genesis came out what at least 2 years before the SNES. I got a SNES just for the Mario games and a handful of RPGS. If a game was on both systems the Genesis version ran faster and had better controls.

I owned a Genesis, and while I liked having that system, I grew kind of tired of it from playing the dozen or so really great games it had a lot. The SNES had about the same number of true classics, and I'm sure I would have grown tired of it if it had a SNES instead of a genesis.
Of all the games from the 16 bit generation, the one I like revisiting the most is Street Fighter II. Although the SNES ports featured better graphics and sound, I prefer the Genesis ports because Sega's (official) 6-button controller lets you control the game with a proper button scheme (No pressing triggers to execute normal moves).

Super Nintendo for me, though I liked some games on Sega like Shining Force and Streets of Rage.

SNES had Super Metroid. That was pretty much all it needed to secure my vote even though there were some damn fine Genesis games, even though I've never really been a Sonic fan.

Super Nintendo. It has the masterpiece Castlevania IV, Contra III, Super Metroid, Metal Warriors, Zelda: Link to the Past, and the Street Fighter games.
It also has vastly superior controllers. I like Genesis, but its controllers are big clunky pieces of crap.
