Eventually someone's gonna have to do it, but i'd hate to see them try. RDJ was born to play Tony Stark.

Personally, while I could see it happening and wouldn't have a problem with it, Marvel have literally thousands of characters in their bank.
If RDJ wanted to leave, just shelf Iron Man for a while and pick another character. Wonder Man, Black Knight, Black Panther, all great characters, all could use a push.
Iron Man isnt the be all and end all, and Marvel would do well to recognise that else the MCU will end up turning in to the comics, where they've trained people to think if it doesnt have X or Y in it, it doesnt matter.

I like Mark Wahlberg, but no, God, no.
I agree about shelving Iron Man if RDJ doesn't want to play the character anymore.

He's a little older, but I think Jon Hamm would make a decent Tony Stark (not as good as RDJ, but a suitable replacement).

I think Iron Man 3 proved that for at least this iteration of the character, if it's anyone but RDJ it'll just be unwatchable.

War Machine isn't the lead character, and this statement is pretty disrespectful to Howard AND Cheadle.
With Bond, the character is bigger than the actor who plays him. The hallmarks of a Bond movie will aways be there regardless of who's portraying him. Same goes with characters like Batman and Superman. With Iron Man, it's pretty much been defined exclusively by Robert Downey Junior's portrayal.

If you wanna recast Iron Man, then you're gonna have to start making movies that are actually good on a movie level. RDJ has carried the last two pieces of crap to "watchable" on the strength of his Tony Stark.

“They changed War Machine, nobody noticed.” No, Sam, people noticed. You just don't remember they noticed.

It's not that nobody noticed, it's that nobody cared because by all accounts (all I remember, at least), Terrence Howard's an asshole.
Yeah, people would notice if they changed Iron Man, especially since Robert Downey Jr.'s not playing a character in those movies, he's just standing in front of a camera being awesome.

I give it 6 years before they decide to ultimately reboot the franchise again. Gotta keep putting those movies out and making money!

That's the funny thing about comic book movies, they always shape the image of the characters in the general public's minds way more than any of their portrayals in the actual books since they reach more people.
Tim Burton's somewhat edgier 1989 Batman movie arguably helped distance Batman from his 60's camp persona even more than Denny O'Neil and Frank Miller. After Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, he was more known for his angsty side than his corny quips with most people, and likewise most people now associate Iron Man with a cocky RDJ snarking all over the place.
I'm not saying I wouldn't want to see someone else give IM a shot, but given the series's popularity, this was inevitable. It's like how many consider Connery the definitive Bond even though Craig and Dalton were arguably closer to the Fleming novels.

I can probably see someone else doing a good job playing Tony Stark, but none will measure up to RDJ's awesome portrayal. It truly goes without saying that RDJ carried the last two films, especially the third one. I can't see anyone else doing that.

I'd reboot the series, but within the same universe as the established films. Just say that the new Iron Man is Tony Stark's son or something. Then they can give an actor a fresh start, and still maybe have a cameo from Robert Downey Junior.

I'm guessing, he'll do a few more and then they'll quit making them for a few years, then they'll bring it back and there will be a new hot young actor playing Iron man and our kids will be on the boards complaining about him

Marvel turned Tony Stark into a teenager a few years back. Just sign the latest Teen Beat coverboy, put him into the suit and rake in all the money from the tweens. Wait, why are you guys marching towards me with pitchforks and torches?

He's not going to be able to do it forever. As much as I love RDJ I would have no problem seeing a new actor in the role
Batman & Superman have went through multiple actors, why would iron man be any different

It would not be as weird as Wolverine not being played by Hugh Jackman

“They changed War Machine, nobody noticed.” No, Sam, people noticed. You just don't remember they noticed. Believe it or not, I didn't realize they changed actors. I only saw Iron Man 2 once and then Iron Man 3 years later.
