Just replace him with David Tennant, everyone'll be fine.

Is it just me, or does this sound like a Marvel-sponsored reaction to this?

Easy solution...Kill TOny Stark in Avengers 3. Move on to other properties.

Not for awhile it wouldn't. Like 5-6 years, with a different interpretation, sure, but right now, Tony Stark is RDJ; your audience, especially your casual moviegoer will straight up reject another actor.

There's an Iron Maiden and an Iron Woman in various incarnations in the Marvel Universe.

He's not going to be able to do it forever. As much as I love RDJ I would have no problem seeing a new actor in the role Batman & Superman have went through multiple actors, why would iron man be any different The difference though is that both Bats and Supes are iconic enough characters that people can look past the actor who's inhabiting the role. With Iron Man, he's secondary enough, that before the movies, outside your comics audience likely knew nothing about him, and Marvel has went and made him pretty much the linchpin and main character of the cinematic universe (not without good reason as RDJ's portrayal has been awesome. Hell, if he hadn't worked, likely NONE of the other franchises woulda amounted to much beyond decently grossing flicks. You certainly wouldn't have gotten Avengers.) As such, it's gonna take both a)time and b)a radically different take on the character to succeed.

Is it just me, or does this sound like a Marvel-sponsored reaction to this? If RDJ cared that much, why not take, say, $40 million and split the rest between his cast mates?

Presumably so that it creates some precedent for paying the actors well, rather than being something that'd never happen again once he was gone.

I'm not suggesting that he just cut a check to them, more that he offers to take less money when talking to the studio in exchange for them getting more money. You could still set a precedent, and in a big ensemble movie it's probably easier to negotiate pay for costars when one isn't taking in as much of a massive share of the film's staffing budget.

Hell, can't they do a film where Tony Stark retires as Iron Man or something and passes the suit and persona down to a new character.
I don't think a reboot is really an option as they want a continuous evolving universe in the films.

There's an Iron Maiden and an Iron Woman in various incarnations in the Marvel Universe. There was also an Iron Lady movie, and it had to be the biggest piece of crap super hero movie I ever saw! She didn't even wear a costume, fight crime, have powers, or anything! I don't even understand how it was supposed to tie in with Iron Man. Definitely skip it!

“They changed War Machine, nobody noticed.” No, Sam, people noticed. You just don't remember they noticed. A better example would have been "They changed the Hulk, and it worked out just fine."

He's a little older, but I think Jon Hamm would make a decent Tony Stark (not as good as RDJ, but a suitable replacement). Remember a couple months ago, when Jon Hamm was actually mentioned as RDJ's replacement if he didn't re-sign? (This really happened, btw.) .......yeah, while people do like Jon Hamm they SH&T all over this news.

Bruce Banner should be meeker, more of an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, imo and Ruffalo got that across well. Norton, Robert Downey Jr., and Samuel L. Jackson would've been too much in some scenes. edit: I called him Ruffle. Heh.

Like others have said, prior to the movie universe...Iron Man was not an A-Lister in terms of public awareness like Batman or Superman, or Spiderman or the X-Men have been for decades. The movies made him that. More accurately, RDjr made him that.
So, as others have suggested, I'd shelf Iron Man if Robert wasn't up for coming back. Shelf it for a good five to seven years and bring up another lesser known to the general public character & try to raise their stock up like you did with that character.
I mean, there's no reason in this theory we couldn't have Capt and Thor, more so Capt, essentially become the new figurehead of the Marvel Movie Universe. They more or less seem to be setting that up with how they've taken things anyways, with Capt being the younger, yet technically older, figurehead just barely below Tony in the Avengers.
