I will say Ruffalo was the best, but Bana and Norton were fine too. It's not a fair comparison, because any competent actor can play Banner and keep rolling right along; it's CGI Hulk that's the star there. Doesn't honestly matter THAT much who plays Bruce.

Considering how much acclaim Ruffalo got for his performance in Avengers, the argument for the opposite could be made.

I dunno, like I said, I thought Ruffalo was the best; but if you plugged Norton in there saying his lines, it woulda worked out ok. Hulk still woulda tossed Loki around and sucker punched Thor etc.

Personally, I think Norton stands out too much. Bruce Banner should be meeker, more of an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, imo and Ruffalo got that across well. Norton, Robert Downey Jr., and Samuel L. Jackson would've been too much in some scenes. edit: I called him Ruffle. Heh. How do you feel about the guy before Norton, though? Eric Bana? It's been too long since I've seen it. I remember liking his performance enough but other aspects of the movie dragged on for me.

Bana did a good job, in my book, just that...his look was all wrong, really.
You get a guy that's built like a quarterback to play Banner, really?
That always baffled me. I mean, usually I can overlook appearances and the differences between source material & the movie version if the performance is good. But while Norton and Ruffalo aren't exactly string beans, they're able to convey a meeker state than Bana could. It was like if they tried to stick Chris Evans into the role and it takes away, in my opinion, from the transformation of Banner to Hulk if you got somebody already fairly well built playing Banner.

That's the second time I've seen someone involved with the movies say that and... No, the second and third movies would be completely unwatchable if it were anyone else. First one, maybe.

In my opinion, Norton was the best Banner because he actually looked like Banner. The glimpse picture we saw of him in the government ID with the lab coat, the glasses, and his hair he just looked exactly how I always envisioned Banner from the comics and the animated series.
Whenever I watch Avengers I get distracted due to the obvious differences between Norton and Ruffalo. As much as I love the Avengers and Ruffalo's performance, a big part of me wishes Norton stayed around.

Is that really true about him though? I haven't heard much about him being impossible to work with or being a prick to anyone.

Each Banner has had some great strengths. Bana played a fantastic emotional cripple, which is what his movie called for. Norton played a great scientist on the verge of flipping out/going in to a semi tranquil state. Ruffalo was very much the modern Banner who is witty, kind of a know it all and a smart ass.

Mostly I heard he was a hardcase after the film because they changed it so much from what they had told him the movie would be. And from various sources that first cut was pretty phenomenal.

First thing Norton did upon being cast was do a complete, uncredited rewrite of the whole script. I can see how that would rub people the wrong way.

They'll make another Iron Man movie. The actor they pick will knock it out of the park. Everyone will be surprised. People will wake up and realize that the only thing RDJ and Tony Stark actually have in common were substance abuse problems which weren't really covered in the movies. Iron Man will pass on as a legacy role. The world will keep spinning. End of story.
