What if the WWE didnt become a publicly traded company in 2000? Would there be any significant changes?

None. Going public just means they have to have public accounts. Nothing else changed.

Not like Cena,PG, etc kicked in a day later. The Attitude Era was still in full swing after the WWF went public.

I'm almost certain 9/11 could have been avoided.

Benoit had a bigger impact in the company's change of direction than a public stock offering, and it's not even close. Better thread would be what if Benoit had just killed himself and not murdered his family.

Yeah let's do a Benoit thread. He's right though. The entire onscreen product changed because of that, not because the WWE went public.

Everyone always says the product changed after benoit, but I disagree. The only thing that changed was the Vince death storyline. It's not like they were doing super raunchy programming nor were there segments like the HLA and other demeaning women segments. The blood thing with pg came with Lindas run in politics not Benoit.

Oh no I completely accept that, I don't think people quite realise how close the whole Benoit thing was to finishing the business. You have to say WWE have done remarkably well to rebuild after that.

It wasn't remotely close whatsoever. Business wasn't affected at all. Sure there was negative publicity but, unlike the early 90s steroid/sex scandals, it never came anywhere near negatively impacting on the core business. The Summerslam PPV just two months after the whole affair was one of the best non WM PPVs they had done for a good few years. As awful as the situation was its impact on ratings, attendances, merchandise sales and buyrates, was negligible. It certainly wasn't a huge 'against-all odds' blow they had to recover from.

WWE's toy deal with Mattel that apparently prohibits blood, choking, male on female violence, and demands that their shows stay PG or under; had more of an impact on WWE's content than going public. That and the Benoit murders/suicide.

Wait, you liked SummerSlam 2007? Well from a buyrates stand point. In the context of talking about how it affected business, if it was an event that nearly killed them they'd have struggled to get the over half a million buys for their next flagship event after the scandal. It may sound crass but screwing up the Invasion angle and turning Austin heel probably came closer to destroying the business than this did. And neither came close at all.

Ok,I see what you mean. I just read how the PPV had more buys than the previous year.
The show was terrible though. Batista vs Great Khali made the Batista vs JBL match from two years earlier look like a classic.
