The A's have "meaningful interest" in free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ted Lilly is retiring. He was actually doing well with the Dodgers before the injuries started to pile on.

So Deadspin bought a Hall of Fame vote. This should be interesting. Apparently they're going to decide who their votes goes to via popular vote (likely registered Deadspin users and not an open poll or anything). I love this because it sticks it to the pretentious blowhards in the BBWAA like Bill Madden who see themselves as the Self-Appointed Guardians of Baseball.

Did they overpay? Yeah. Is it as bad as I thought? Not at all.

Please tell me I was having a bad dream: I pictured the White Sox kicking the tires on Bruce Chen.

Please tell me I was having a bad dream: I pictured the White Sox kicking the tires on Bruce Chen. He always seems to have great games against them. If you can't beat em, join em. I wouldn't mind him as a cheap swingman out of the bullpen.

I wouldn't mind him as a cheap swingman out of the bullpen. That's my dilemma, almost all of these so-called "Sox killers" turn out to be stiffs when they put on the black pinstripes. (Jesse Crain was obviously an exception; overall, their success rate sucks.) Better to take a chance on some young free agent with nothing going for them, they seem to have better luck with those guys for a year. Look at De Aza, he gave the team a good jolt, then in 2013 set the course to fly off a cliff in an ACME-branded rocketship piloted by Wile E. Coyote. They need to definitely make up their mind on Santiago, you can't start him in the bullpen as the long reliever, then rely on him 2 weeks later to bail out some kid that was sent down because he had a crappy pair of starts against the Indians. Then continue ad nauseum until August and say "Screw it, you're a starter now."

According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Twins have turned their attention to free agent Phil Hughes.

The royals have given their gm Dayton Moore and extension through 2016. Dayton hasn't showed enough to get another extension.

The Twins and yes, the Mets(!!!) are the strongest suitors in on Bronson Arroyo according to Chris Cotillo of SBNation.

That organization's been awful for decades now. Outside of this season (where they had their first winning season in ages even though they were well-short of a playoff berth), they're consistent basement dwellers in the AL and build great young talent only to trade them away. Their current GM is just continuing that legacy of failure and tradition of futility.

Orioles acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Giants for cash considerations.
Multiple executives told the New York Post's Joel Sherman that they expect Carlos Beltran to land with the Yankees.
