I'm going to make a new series of threads called "Why Did They Flop?" Every day, Really Dude, you've made four or five threads about flopping today alone. Can you maybe constrain them to one thread, and just change the name of the thread each day? And, Mordecai failed because he needed work in ring, and religious gimmicks rarely get over. Why, he ought to be

Becuase his gimmick was f***ing stupid and he didn't have the size to pull it off as well.

I rarely say guys who are already "big" need to put on more mass but for the Mordecai gimmick Fertig really needed some more bulk behind him to really pull the gimmick off. The dude was tall enough but in cases like this tall isn't enough. Then there's the fact that the gimmick wasn't built well enough. We knew who he was but barely and then when he debuted he made the smallest impact possible, even though his entrance was impressive, by taking on Scotty 2 Hotty who even got some offence in on the guy. He should have come in like a hurricane and instead by the end of his debut match he already looked like a small breeze. Game over.

I read an interview with Kevin where he said they we're telling him he was going to feud with the Undertaker, he knew himself he wasn't ready and requested to be sent back to OVW.

I wasn't watching at the time but from what I've been exposed to he seemed to only exist for Taker to beat, to the point they should have just called him the Overgiver.

He wrestled Scotty 2 Hotty in his debut...on PPV. (I think)
No one took him seriously.

Wrong guy for a great gimmick. Agreed. It would've been interesting to see a young Mark Calaway take on this role.

I dunno. I was looking forward to a feud with Taker. I love it when they give Taker tailor made opponents like Mankind and Kane. I thought he was decent enough, as Kevin Thorn too.

It's a shame things didn't work out, be it through inexperience or whatever, because I thought this gimmick was pretty awesome.

The gimmick itself was too over-the-top. Also, Kevin Fertig aka Kevin Thorn was a pretty unremarkable talent.

He was a guy that's big but not big enough to be pushed as a MONSTER (like Judas Mesias in TNA). I think Fandango is taller than him.

Being bad in the ring shouldn't matter. If you're produced right, sold right, protected right and used right your in-ring work really shouldn't matter. The fact they cannot hide someone's in-ring deficiencies is a damning indictment on the company. Look at Warrior, he could only do clotheslines and yet for four years other than Hogan he was probably the most over guy in the industry until Austin came along.
If someone cannot work then as writers/producers you mask that. If they take a guy that wasn't that good in the ring and just throw him on television to have segment-long matches, then that's their own fault.
A good producer/writer can make a guy who can only do one thing competently, look a million bucks.

I've just gone back and watched everything of his on YouTube.
I can't think of a good reason why it didn't continue. His in ring skills are getting undersold in this thread: he wasn't anything remarkable but he looked pretty solid in what he did. The gimmick itself seems a little too much for the 2000's, maybe it could have been reigned back a bit, and he doesn't seem like a perfect fit for it.
Still, as a starting point it was alright.

Wasn't there a rumor that Mordecai was going to do something with Undertaker? As for why he flopped though... I don't really remember him around enough to do anything. It felt like someone approved the gimmick, Vince saw it and hated it, and that was the end of it. Yea he seemed like a perfect foil for the Undertaker. He also seemed like a perfect opponent for Eddie since Mordecai can bring up all the sins Eddie commits yet still gets cheered. Seeing as how he cut a promo on him while he was still champion I half expected him to cost him the title at GAB.

Because his gimmick was too goofy. He looked like a fat albino, and was as scary as a cupcake.

I hope the people calling it a bad gimmick aren't Wyatt fans.

He wasn't the best worker, but he was booked in a way where those flaws were barely noticeable in the end. I'm not sure if WWE could've made that work for Mordecai the same way it did for Warrior and Henry, but if they tried to book him correctly, he could've come off as a very over heel.
