He's likely only going to be wrestling for 2-3 more years, if that, so of course he's past his peak. Doesn't mean he's not really, really good though.

The problem for me is, I just feel the idea of CM Punk leaving before Randy Orton or John Cena is weird. He isn't built as a veteran, while guys like Cena and Orton kind of are, and supposedly have almost another decade in them.

yeah he has. but he's peaked a lot more recently than some of the other guys still stinking up the main event scene.

TBH, I'm glad. He only has around 3 years left at most and he's been booked to a point where half the roster shouldn't even be considered challenges for him making every big match left for him at this point seem far in between.

Dude has pretty much admitted that he's only gonna wrestle for a few more years so that's not really a bad thing. Being the catalyst of the most influential angle of the modern era is one hell of a peak.

In a way Cena and Orton are kind of anomalies since Punk's career length (assuming he sticks to his plan) are more on par with the Rock's original run and Stone Cold's run.

He's still popular as hell, and I doubt that'll change any time soon.

Hopefully he's serious about his intentions to retire early. Not that I want him gone or anything but wrestling needs more dudes that get out while they're on top. Get in, do some iconic stuff, get paid, and get the hell out.

I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, but that's what people were saying about Hogan in 1993, and then he became the biggest heel in the industry in 1996. People also were saying the same thing about Chris Jericho in 2005, and then he reinvented himself and had the best run of his career in 2008. It does seem as though Punk has hit the high point of his career with the huge title reign, but you never know. The angle he ends his career with might be huge.

In retrospect, even though it was a really great moment, I wish they hadn't have built to Punk's contract expiring and him taking the title with him. It had potential but it also meant that they'd have to leave their new rising star off television for months to sell an angle. It was very anti-climatic for him to come out a few weeks later and have a hold-the-belt-up off with Cena.
If he had just won the title at MITB like he did and held onto it with Vince trying to take it from him with various adversaries (Del Rio, Miz, Triple H, Nash, Ziggler, Jericho, Bryan, basically all the people he wrestled anyway) it would've been better. Losing the title at Summerslam, getting pinned by Triple H, Triple H not turning heel and Punk admits "I was wrong you're a swell guy" and then that god-awful Walkout thing happened. It's irritating even thinking about the momentum that was squandered by the time Punk won the title at Survivor Series.

I'm sure a lot of people thought Mark Henry peaked with the ECW title as well. Though that's one of the best parts of wrestling. Just when you think you know a performer they do something you never expected and create a moment you remember for years. Can Punk have another storyline that could potentially outdo his Summer of Punk and the initial feud with Heyman? Sure. There's no reason to think otherwise.

I did point out that I thought facing Stone Cold could help his career drastically. I made a scenario thread of Punk reinventing himself in a feud with Stone Cold and the aftershock of it. Bottom line is, I said that Punk could go up high with an anomaly. The nWo was an anomaly. Business Jericho was a shock, too. Punk would need to do something drastic again.

Punk hit his peak in 2011.
He's just been kind of hanging around ever since.

The 2 craziest things Punk could do to reinvent himself would be to betray his straight edge beliefs or become a Corporate guy. I think he could do an amazing job with either, yet I'd be disappointed as a fan because, face or heel, Punk IS a straight edge rebel, and it'd be so weird to see him as anything else. Hell, he'd have to change his name or something. If he was going to be around for 5-10 more years, I could see him doing something like that. But if he is winding things down, it's probably best to just keep doing what he does and not sacrifice the goodwill with the fans.
Maybe he could "retire", and come back in 2 or 3 years as something totally different for a final run. There's a lot of possibilites left for someone as creative and talented as CM Punk.

Maybe not overkill suit-wearing, but I did mention this in a Stone Cold vs. Punk thread where Punk would sell his sou to beat Austin then take the cake as champion until a young face finally dethrones him.

That would be a pretty sick parallel to Austin selling out to Vince to beat The Rock too.
