Sounds like a damned if ya do, damned if ya don't situation for Cracker Barrel there once they tried a PR move that seemingly blew up in their faces.

Like, when CM Punk was called on some homophobic statements he said. What did he do? He said, yeah, I f***ed up. Off topic, but one of my favorite things with homophobia, out of touch old loners from Free Republic and CM Punk intersecting were comments online when he told bigots to drink bleach: Between hilariously dated like 1970s era wrestling assumptions (this was from May 2012, height of CM Punk's bland face run, btw): "On the contrary. Developing a “bad guy” persona the fans love to hate is a staple of professional wrestling. This publicity stunt will put money is his and the organizers’ pockets. That’s not to say he isn’t in fact a poof. But I can picture him showing up in the ring in a wedding dress to set the stage for a virtual riot in the stands. Whatever sells tickets" "Isn’t this just part of a Vince McMahon scripted act? Like back when the Iron Sheikh would come out and say “Iran #1! USA, ptui!” Just so Captain Hetero can come out and kick his arse in a big Friday night pay-per-view?" Demographic experts: "I can’t imagine the general target demographic for televised wrestling is much in favor of homosexuals, so this guy ain’t too bright to get mixed up in this." CM Punk is gay, from people who have fairly evidently not watched wrestling in about 25+ years: "One can only *imagine* the holds he tries on his boyfriend du jour. " "An empty-headed sodomite entertainer masquerading as an athlete." "He probably saves his "hardest blows" for his boyfriend. He loves rasslin' 'cause he gets to grab men's crotches and stick his face in 'em... " Folks who are totally up to speed on the WWE's major markets: "Good move, Punk, with the WWF being so popular on the liberal east and west coasts. /s" And one of my favorite comments in internet history: "This could get entertaining. This guy needs to be retired from the business. I’m not talking about protests or anything at his matches, because a lot of wrestlers make a career out of being “bad guys”. Instead word of mouth that he is gay, and involved with other gay wrestlers. That straight wrestlers don’t want to practice with him because he gets “sexually excited”, and it grosses them out. That sort of thing could severely hurt his career." Are these exact comments from FreeRepublic?

We don't mean to offend...so we're going to side with the guy who offended gay people and black people. Yeah, I noticed that too. They may as well have said, "Look, a lot of our customers are racist and homophobic. Hell, we ourselves have a history of racism accusations. So to our loyal customers, please, come on back to Cracker Barrel. Unless you're gay. Or black. Or just not white in general."

Sounds like a damned if ya do, damned if ya don't situation for Cracker Barrel there once they tried a PR move that seemingly blew up in their faces. More like, 'Damned to hell if you do, moderate backlash if you don't.' To me, the fervor in this story is largely on one side, and that's the side Cracker Barrel has to bow down to because this is such a big part of their base. There have been figures from the religious/political right which pounced on them.

Granted, I'm just saying it seems largely self-inflicted. As you said, had they not done anything initially trying to garner positive publicity, likely no one would have noticed or cared that they sold Duck merchandise.
I will say their food is generally ok. Like it's fairly bland "Southern" fare that's nowhere near as good as homemade (and for that chain restaurant version of food Dixie Cafe has em beat), but it's alright. The ambiance and such is goofy/fake though.

This may have already been said, but the "freedom of speech" defense falls flat every time people defend this crap. And I tried to argue with Jim Ross on twitter over this today. And given the political bans etc Im not making this a political point but rather over the concept of free speech.
Freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want without being censored by government. Robertson is allowed to do that. You are allowed to be as publically racist and homophobic as you can be. There is no law against it.
However, and this is the point that bigots always twist or forget, Freedom of opinion DOES NOT EQUATE TO FREEDOM FROM OPINION. People are within their rights by way of the same law that protects your right to free speech to be pissed off at your sheer stupidity. They are well within their rights to call you out and publically slam you for being a dick. You do not get to denounce any minority you want, write it off as being "a product of the 60s" and then claim that your right to free speech is being taken away because people think youre an asshole.
If you have a problem with people confronting your opinion then remember one thing. You don't have to say every stupid little thing that comes to mind. It's 2013. There are certain things that are (rightfully) not OK to say anymore.

We don't mean to offend...so we're going to side with the guy who offended gay people and black people. Actually, the fact that they were initially poised to pull these items tells me that they know what Phil did was wrong and offensive. I'll wager, that them flip flopping was either them wringing their hands at losing money, or someone up the chain vetoed the decision. More hypocrisy from society if you ask me. People protest Chic-a-fila and the protesters are "in the wrong" because "it's just a guy (the owner) standing up for his beliefs". Cracker Barrel goes to stand up for their beliefs by pulling Duck Dynasty merch, and what do these same sort of people do...? They pitch the same sort of bitch fit that they ridiculed the LGBT protesters for against Chic-a-fila. So the whol "standing up for beliefs" defense is utter bullshit, ladies and gentlemen. Remember that.

I can give Crack Barrel credit for at least trying to show that they don't support what Phil said, but just in terms of PR, doesn't flipflopping make them look worse than staying persistent on not having Duck Dynasty merchandise? They went from "We're removing this to show that we don't support bigotry" to "We were wrong in our disapproval of bigotry and we're also too spineless to deal with backlash but it's back now!". I get that they're a business that needs to make money, but it's not like it makes you look any better to just go back on making a statement.

What I don't get is how those that complain about his suspension don't A) get how what he said was horribly offensive, and B) he might have been cut a break by A&E. The dude is the third person punished by a cable network in the last few months for violating the morality clause of their contract. The other two lost their jobs entirely. Did any of those defending their man for knowingly represent himself in that manner in a published interview defend Alec Baldwin when he got fired for using anti-gay slurs in a heated private exchange that paparazzi caught on tape? I suspect not.

After reading a few more days worth of friends' relatives complaining, I just really hope someday that those poor straight white males will be adequately represented in the media and have a say in world affairs.

There's a thing this is. I am not sure I can say it, but I won't. Really, really look into what he's saying. The answer is there. Here's a clue. It's called laundering.

Um, that just mentions an online petition. What part in it said A&E reinstated Robertson?
