I don't know why but everything he commentated on came across as quite matter-of-factly, I don't know if that's just how I've interpreted it or not but I wouldn't say Ross was the greatest announcer ever like some people do.

JR in the Attitude Era...drab is definitely not a word I'd use. He and King were one of the most excitable enthusiastic commentary teams ever.

Drab is not a term I would ever associate with JR. Sure he wasn't putting himself over or interrupting diva matches but the man had a fire for wrestling. He was a play by play man and did exactly what he was supposed to. JR and the crowd involvement made what often time would have been average events into true main event spectacles. By gawd those fruity delicious skittles.

I think he's very good.... BUT when he's off, god damn it got ugly.

If I was gonna label an announcer as "drab" and too matter-of-fact, it'd be Gordon Solie (and for the product of his era, his style worked). JR's always been about the screaming.

We're all entitled to our opinion, and even the best of us are horribly wrong sometimes.
Kidding.
...half kidding.

JR used to make me enjoy matches more. These days I enjoy matches in spite of the commentary.

You're wrong. Your opinion is wrong. Merry Christmas. Seriously, though. We just don't have the same interpretation. JR always made things feel real to me, darn it.

Love his commentary, especially after the HHH/HBK SummerSlam match when HHH was beating the shit out of Shawn with the sledgehammer.
Outside of the booth, though, I have no use for this guy, but that's a different topic.

I want to hear JR do commentary like a young man named Booker T. JR saying "WE COMIN' FER YOU <n-word>" doesn't sound like a good idea.

J.R was at his best when paired with Heyman.
I wish that announce team lasted longer.

JR is one of the best announcers of all time.

Yeah, his voice is synonymous with a lot of big events, but to me, just as an announcer...not exactly the best.

I'm in the minority, but I actually found JR and King rather annoying back in the day. JR with his southern drawl, and King with his... well everything.

I always preferred Tony Schiavone to JR, but that's me being a WCW kid.

I liked J.R but his fangasms for Stone Cold could get annoying. He did give us one of the most memorable moments in WWE history.

I agree with OP. He was always subpar in my book. He was really dull and when he would scream it would be cringeworthy and out of place. That was during the AE through mid 2000's, and then he turned even worse, same as the lifeless 2K14 commentary, just reading lines half asleep.
I prefer almost anyone's commentary over JR's, maybe other than Oklahoma and Tony Dawson from NXT.
