For National sports, there is no "Local" team around here. Denver is the closest team at around 400 miles away.
I refuse to cheer for a team just because they are closest and because I "should" like them for that reason

I get why people don't like their hometown teams. Maybe they just like another team better?
What I'll never understand is the archaic mentality behind "I WAS BORN HERE SO THE THINGS IN CLOSET PROXIMITY TO ME ARE BETTER THAN THE THINGS SLIGHTLY FARTHER AWAY THAN ME!!!!! WOoooooO!"
Like people who are all in love with the city they were born and raised in just because they were born there....like, come on buddy, you didn't even pick which city you were born in and/or grew up in.

Spite.
I know a Packers fan, & a Knicks fan. The Packers fan's dad was a Bears fan, so he did it just to spite him. The other became a Knicks fan because he didn't like MJ, & figured they were the Bulls biggest rival.
Edit: I'm a Michigan fan despite living in Chicago, except I didn't do it out of spite. My dad was a Michigan fan & the first football game he ever took me to was Michigan vs Northwestern at Dyche Stadium. Michigan beat their ass, & the rest as they say is history.

There's a certain romance to supporting your local team through thick and thin I think...as frustrating as it may be.

For me, it's because for all my lifetime, we've either not had local teams or they've been god-awful.
I live in Virginia a little under an hour south of Washington DC, so all the DC teams are my "local" teams. And I literally can't remember a single time in my lifetime the Redskins haven't been mediocre. But then again, I couldn't care less about football. Then we got the Wizards and the Nationals, and even with Michael f***ing Jordan the Wizards were awful. I'm not rooting for the Nationals because I'm not a baseball fan, but if I did that would just feel like bandwagoning just like every-f***ing-body else around here when the team just suddenly stopped being terrible and got amazing out of nowhere.
The only local team I like is the Capitals, because, and bear with me here, because I know it's a little crazy.........they're actually good.

I cheer for all of the sports teams associated with my hometown...
Except for the Lions. The Detroit Lions are the most hapless, helpless and hopeless franchise in pro sports and do not deserve support from anyone.

I am from a town in the shadow of Houston and grew up an Oilers fan and mildly interested in the Cowboys. When the oilers moved off my heart broke so I adopted Dallas full time. When Houston was awarded a new franchise, Tennessee had just changed the name of their team. I and many others assumed they would buy the rights and name the new team the Oilers. Them not doing so was strikes two and three all at once. I have not and will not cheer for the Houston texans. I know that may sound bitter or immature, but I literally grew up on Houston Oiler football and to have it taken away over greed hurt me and wounded my trust at an impressionable age. Taking the Texans side here, Im pretty sure Bud Addams was not going to sell the name rights no matter what.Or he was going to offer them up at some stupid ammount that no man would pay. Addams was bitter and pissed at Houston for not playing his game and did not want to see them get anything that he built.

The Detroit Lions are the most hapless, helpless and hopeless franchise in pro sports and do not deserve support from anyone. Oddly enough, I'm from West Virginia and I have been a Lions fan since I started watching football (1988). I have stuck with them this long and I won't give up on them now. I am also a Detroit Tigers fan as well. But as for the subject of the thread, we have no pro sports teams in this state. I do support Marshall and WVU in college athletics. Well, I don't support WVU's basketball team anymore. I have never been able to stand Bob Huggins and refuse to support a team he coaches. Anyway, most people around here root for the Pittsburgh and Cincinnati teams since they are the closest franchises. I have no issue with any of those teams and would like to see them do well but when I first started watching sports regularly in 1988, I just liked the Lions and Tigers. In basketball, I have always backed the Pacers (I was a huge Chuck Person fan) and when I finally got into hockey in 1991, I went with the Blackhawks because of Roenick and Chelios. I still support every one of those teams to this day. If by some miracle in the future that West Virginia would get a pro team, I would most likely cheer for them but I wouldn't give up on my current teams that I have invested 20+ years into.

There is this odd phenomenon in Iowa were a large portion of the state isn't aware that the Hawkeyes are not the only "local" team that exists.
I know what it's like to walk into a place with Cyclone or Panther gear on and catching shit because I don't support "the hometown Hawkeyes".

I just think the whole idea of supporting the hometown team - just because they're the hometown team - is archaic and ancient. With the sports packages available on cable and satellite, online streaming (legal or otherwise), social media, even Sportscenter, it's easier to follow just about any college or pro team you want than it's ever been.

The only local team I don't cheer for is the Atlanta Falcons. I've never liked them and remember being thrilled when Denver mauled them in the Super Bowl. They're just an unexciting team with a notorious bandwagon fan base.
I've just always been a fan of the Carolina Panthers. My aunt lives in Charlotte, so I guess she 'brainwashed' me more and more with every visit.

Y'all bunch of quitters never liking or quitting on your team cause they aren't so good anymore. Especially the guy who was thinking of giving up on the Lakers after being a fan of them for 16 years despite being a dynasty team. I'm an Oilers fan who wasn't born in the 80's. My suffering is only comparable to Bills or Cleveland fans. To any fan of teams that historically suck or currently the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked, I respect the hell out of you!

I don't know about that. The OP on giving up the Lakers is in a similar situation as I am, I think. We both support LA teams, but over the past 3-4 years, my love of hockey has overshadowed my basketball fandom in general, that I no longer really care about the Lakers or the sport of basketball, really.

The only time it really bothers me that someone doesn't cheer for a close team is when they're against it for "I'm smarter than all the rest of these idiot rubes!" reasons. Oooh, such a rebel. Nobody cares.
I'm from South-Central PA and I grew up an Eagles fan and couldn't imagine myself jumping ship for any reason, no matter how bad they suck (the year they went through 6 starting QBs) or what unlikeable d-bag they sign (TO, Vick). The actual most popular team in my area is the Steelers (even after all the Rapelisberger drama), although by NFL broadcast rules, my area's "home team" is technically the Baltimore Ravens.
As far as hockey, I'm a Penguins fan, and have been since I first started watching the NHL in the early 90s. Most people in this area actually don't give a damn about the NHL, and instead live-or-die with their local AHL team, the Hershey Bears. If you do see someone walking around in NHL gear around here, though, most likely it'll be Washington Capitals gear (due to Hershey being their farm team), then Pittsburgh Penguins gear, then Philadelphia Flyers. When Hershey was Colorado's farm team, we had Colorado fans around here as carry-over. When Philadelphia's farm team moves back to Allentown, there may be more Flyer fans again, we'll see.

We both support LA teams, but over the past 3-4 years, my love of hockey has overshadowed my basketball fandom in general, that I no longer really care about the Lakers or the sport of basketball, really. I can understand if one just doesn't care about the sport anymore. That's fine. I just can't understand giving up on a team and getting a new favorite team just because a team has hit a rough patch. When I see people giving up on teams like the Lakers and Yankees because of a few bad seasons, I just can't comprehend it. These are teams that have won multiple titles and will most likely do so again but people will abandon them after a few bad seasons. Maybe it's because I am a Lions fan and I have stuck with a team through an 0-16 year. Also as a Tigers fan, I stayed with them after their 43-119 season. I guess I just can't fathom how quickly people are to give up on a team they have supported for years because of a couple bad seasons. As I said, if you're just tired of a certain sport and giving up watching it completely then I can see the point. However, if someone is just giving up because of a few bad years and switching to a new team, it's harder for me to understand.

To me, it's the same thing as "I work at Target, therefore... f*** Wal-Mart, f*** K-Mart, Target rules supreme!" or "I work at Burger King, so you will NEVER see me caught DEAD in another fast food restaurant." It's blind loyalty.
If you grew up loyal to one team because it happened to be where you were from, cool. If you always liked a team that lives outside your area, cool. I just don't get the whole, "I grew up in Minnesota, so I was a Vikings fan. Now I live in Colorado, so now I'm a Broncos fan."
I do agree, flip-flopping based on who's doing the best that year is kinda dumb.... it basically just means you have nothing invested into each season.

I think the only thing relatively close to home for me was the Huskers. So that's the only team I follow close to me.
Otherwise, my major sports teams are Dallas (NFL), Chicago (NBA & NHL) and Atlanta (MLB).
If you go minor leagues, then I became a fan of the Sioux Falls Storm since I moved up here 5 years ago. Otherwise I was a Sioux City Bandits fan.

Welcome to pro sports fandom
If you respect how great a team is doing and decide to root for them, but they're not from your hometown. You're also stupid.
If you continue to support and cheer for a team that sucks, but they're based in your hometown - you're a TRUE FAN.
