We all know about how Hogan didn't want to lose to Bret, Bret didn't want to lose to HBK in Canada, and HBK didn't want to lose to Dean Douglas. But what other instances are there when someone was a champ and didn't want to lose to the person next up cleanly?

Old school but noteworthy, Bearcat Wright refused to drop the WWA Championship to Fred Blassie in 1963. So the promoters did the obvious thing, they brought out Gene LaBell instead of Blassie to make sure things went according to plan. Wright refused to wrestle LaBell, fled the ring area, and never wrestled in the territory again.

I've heard that Dolph Ziggler was supposed to win the IC title in his 2009 feud with Rey Mysterio but Rey-Rey put the kibosh on it because he didn't feel that Ziggler was ready.

Did Backlund refuse to drop the title to Hogan? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

Did Backlund refuse to drop the title to Hogan? I think I remember reading that somewhere. I don't think it was that he refused to drop it, he just didn't want to do it as a heel, as per Vince Jr.'s wishes.

Did Backlund refuse to drop the title to Hogan? I think I remember reading that somewhere. Yes, but Backlund's objection wasn't putting over Hogan, it was that he was supposed get repackaged as a mohawked punk heel beforehand.

I thought it was JoMo? I don't think so. JoMo was the guy that actually beat Rey for the belt when he failed wellness while Ziggler wouldn't hold the title until 2010.

Hogan not wanting to lose to Bret isn't really substantiated nor makes logical sense looking at how things panned out.

There is a famous one in which Shawn Michaels didn't want to job to Stone Cold at WrestleMania 14. Taker apparently intimidated Shawn into doing the job.
Not title related but Sabu refuses to job to a lot of no name independent guys, as does Masato Tanaka.

I feel Rey was justified though. He'd just come out of a huge, personal feud with Jericho over the title & his mask & come out on top. It would have been a bad decision to just have him lose it instantly to Ziggler. Rey had no problem losing to Ziggler, it just wasn't the right time to do it - I believe they planned to do it at Breaking Point but things didn't go that way unfortunately.

Wasn't Foley added to the Summerslam '99 main event because Austin didn't want to put over HHH? I"ve heard that Foley won that match because of that or Jessie Ventura didn't want to the raise the hand of a heel. Not sure which is true.

I've always heard that it was Ventura not wanting to raise the hand of a heel at that instance, plus since they made it a Triple Threat, if they wanted Trips to win that night he could have just pinned Foley. On top of that Hunter beat Austin a month or two later. Now Austin did torpedo a WWE Title program with Jeff Jarrett which given how they passed belts around in those days wouldn't shock me if it cost Jarrett a WWE Title run.

I'm not sure what the source of this was but I think I remember reading on here recently that creative wanted RVD to win the World Heavyweight title in 2002 but Trips go in Vince's ear and convinced him not to.

Buddy Rogers was booked to lose the title to Lou Thesz, but had second thoughts about doing so. Thesz told him in the ring before the match start that "We can do this the easy way, or the hard way". Needless to say, Thesz went over.
