I understand when it comes to cities with two teams in the same league, it's usually based on regions of the city due to where the arena/stadium is located. But how does one decide to become a Jets or Giants fan since they play in the same stadium and represent NY and NJ.

If you're a major league asshole you're a Jets fan is how I understand it works.
Apologies to any Jets fans here that aren't major league assholes. All 3 of you.

I understand when it comes to cities with two teams in the same league, it's usually based on regions of the city due to where the arena/stadium is located. But how does one decide to become a Jets or Giants fan since they play in the same stadium and represent NY and NJ. A little history: for starters, the Giants are the older franchise, having begun in the 1920's, whereas the Jets were born in the 60's. This means the Giants have a built-in "old school" fanbase, while the Jets kind of took in a bit of a rebel set during the days of the AFL. Secondly, the Giants used to play games primarily at both the Polo Grounds (the old New York baseball Giants park in Manhattan that doesn't exist anymore) and Yankee Stadium (in the Bronx), making them appealing to people within Manhattan/Bronx/North Jersey. The Jets, meanwhile, played most of their games at Shea Stadium in Queens, so their fanbase wound up being drawn heavily from Queens, Brooklyn, and the rest of the Long Island. The Giants were the first team to move to New Jersey later on, and it shows in the way that North Jersey is mostly Giants territory. The Jets still have a strong following, though, but a lot of it still centers around Long Island; after all, up until very recently the Jets still had their training facilities on the Hofstra University Long Island campus. So yeah, history + geography is still at work here, so both teams had their fanbases long before they crossed the Hudson to the Meadowlands.

It's also family. My dad was a Giants fan, so I was raised a Giants fan. As HMark said, it's also a territory thing back to their pre-Meadowlands days, though I do know a bunch of Mets/Giants fans and Yankees/Jets fans.
The Giants also used to have a VERY strong fanbase in the New England area since the Pats are a former AFL team, too. The Pats were also really bad for a long time so it isn't until Bill Parcells where you saw the team start to chip away at the Giants' popularity in the region.

Some people think that really fast airplanes are cool, and some are more into humans who are 20 feet tall and club people with tree trunks.

Easy answer, be British and do not care. Sure your dental plan will suck, but this dilemma is solved as murther-fo.

When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way from your first cigarette to your last dying day.

I remember my brother went through a phase where he was a Yankees/Jets fan primarily because he liked cheering teams that ran counter to the ones I liked (he's since joined the rest of our family as a Mets fan...don't know why he'd choose masochism, but still, it's nice). Doesn't shock me that was back in the late 90's, when the Yankees had their dynasty going and the Parcells-led Jets were the more trendy team around here.

That's sort of how I first became a Devils fan: mainly to annoy my Rangers fan dad. Of course that was during the 1994 Rags' cup run so no one can accuse me of being a frontrunner.

We could also ask how does one decide to be a Laker/Clipper fan, but until recently that might have been a no-brainer.
