Here's my take and don't be offended when I say nerd community cause that includes me too...
Anyway I didn't enjoy this show at first either.I just started it when tbs began syndicating it. I like so many thought Sheldon was pretty insufferable but felt that was the point. He was a dick and eeven his friends didn't like him. So we shouldn't have been fond of him or understood him either.
As the show goes on they give him more personality and really for me has become my favorite aspect of the show. I have bazinga Shirts now etc.
I feel that the nerd community doesn't like Sheldon because they see him as a parody of themselves and are offended to be made fun of.

I know self-described nerds or whatever have a real problem with the show, but if you're like me and don't give a shit about comic books or Star Wars or Star Trek or almost anything anything they obsess over, you're all those characters to me when you try to explain them. It's a good show and I have all the DVDs and watch every week. My only real complaint is now they've doubled the amount of main characters almost and the stories don't always get the attention they should have if they weren't telling 4 stories at once. It's not like Seinfeld where scenes are a minute long and the story bangs out and about 10 things happened, they carry on certain aspects too long. They finally seem to be pulling Penny away from being Kelly Bundy, which she was close to becoming and the last couple episodes she's starting to become herself again. Here is a thing that makes me roll my eyes these days. A bunch of 20-somethings play video games once in awhile, own 100 CDs, or watch Star Wars and all of a sudden they are calling themselves nerds.

I have a love-hate relationship with the show. Sometimes, I watch it and find it hilarious, other times I watch it and find it unsufferable. It really depends on my mood at the time.
As far as Sheldon goes, he's basically the bad person that makes everyone else tolerable. Without him, no one would be likeable, but with him there, the rest of the cast doesn't look so bad. If someone ranted against him the way Quagmire did against Brian on Family Guy, I think it'd make one of the best moments in the show.

I can see not liking Sheldon, but acting like the character hasn't changed isn't really accurate. His relationship with Penny is a clear case of progression.

There is certainly some backlash against the show from those that feel it's taking the piss out of them, and from others who dont like it simply because it is the top rated comedy on TV and liking something mainstream like that isn't cool.
However I can certainly see the dislike for Sheldon thing. He is a weird character in that the writers seem to change how much he's progressed and how much they want him to regress depending on the joke and situation they want to write.
That can be annoying.
However the real character in the show to hate for me is Leonard. Such a whiny little bitch. Like, all the time.

It's just a word that has no meaning anymore. If that show came on when I was growing up, they'd have pocket protectors and Hanson Brother glasses, with greasy hair and an overbite and be super into math. That was a TV nerd then. Now, nerd just means anyone who likes anything. Nerd has gone mainstream and I think the people who considered themselves nerds, took it as a label before it was mainstream are pissed.

I don't think it's just the show, but also the popularity of comic book movies and stuff like that.

They may hate when a bad one is released or when characters are completely changed, but that's less an issue with liking it before it was popular, and more an issue of poor quality.

There's also the upside of seeing my little three year old nephew play with Spider-Man dolls without my brother and I mentioning the character to him. He loves Spider-Man and, if he still does when he gets older, I'll give him my Spider-Man comics if he wants and see if he likes other characters. If not, it's still cool to see.

Sheldon Cooper is what makes the show. Without him the show would be insanely mediocre or bad Ya, I enjoy the other characters but Sheldon is the special one that sets the show apart. BBT sans Sheldon wouldn't be as bad as HIMYM without Barney or 2 & 1/2 Men without Charlie but it certainly wouldn't be the same. As far as earlier talks about Sheldon possibly having Aspergers goes of course the producers have to shoot that idea down. Folks laughing at his quirks is fine, if he had a condition folks would be up in arms. A show caught hell for having annoying character with gluten intolerance.

He's a fantastic character and anyone who can't see his progression as a character or person isn't watching it correctly. He's supposed to be late 20's in the show, so he's had 25+ years of acting a certain way and he's adapting very slowly, but there is massive progression from the first episode to now in pretty much everything to do with him, apart from his spot
