Del Rio actually was hated when he first showed up beat up Rey and won the rumble... not that you would believe it now.... but it happened. Beat up Rey..yes...lokay he had heat But when he won the rumble..there was so much apathy |

I think the dynamic now is that people justify their hatred of heels by directing it toward creative.
Creative is an amazing heel.

It's kind of interesting, hating a heel so much that I guess you just refuse to acknowledge that they are good at their job, so you search for other reasons to justify your hatred of them to yourself. Sign of the times, I suppose. Used to be the day where if you didn't like a guy, you just booed him. Now, there's all this talk of politics and buyouts and debating whether or not you legitimately dislike a guy because you don't want to admit you got worked. I mean, a lot of it is on "shades of grey" booking, but it's also kind of on the crowds, where if a guy is too good as a heel he gets cheered and if he's not good enough as a heel he gets met with total apathy, with little to no middle ground there. By your logic, Del Rio is the best heel in the company, and we both know that to be untrue.  Not Del Rio. Del Rio's just occupying space at this point. |

Also when he first "won" there were boos... then they did that awkward Santino hope spot afterwards for some reason that left people confused. |

Edge during the Matt Hardy return. Now, Edge is legit a top 5 favorite. Same thing happened with Macho during the Steamboat feud. Hated Macho so damn much as Steamboat was my dude. Then I learned to love Macho.
Havent felt real hate for a heel (kayfabe sense) in a long time needless to say. Most heel heat generated now is just meh. The Authority are a mixture of both.

In the late 90s (it may have even started earlier but that's when I started noticing), WWE started pushing this "these guys are really awesome at what they do, beyond the character" thing. It's part of WWE pushing itself as this amazing brand of awesome people that travel the world and put on this incredible show every night. They also really, really don't try to make things feel real anymore, so losing yourself enough to despise a heel is really tough to do unless you're a kid. It's why Lesnar/Cena worked so well, Cena took what seemed like a true ass kicking to the point where even smarks felt like the match was going over the line and becoming some level of a shoot.
Wrestling is seen less as a morality play and more of a variety show or an artform, depending on your viewpoint. If you're watching from an articistic standpoint, you're more thinking "wow that was great work" than "I hate that guy I can't believe he did such a thing!". That's how I watch, it's really the only way I can appreciate it.

And this is why I hate them (and part of it may be legit). For whatever reason, you know deep down that they'll never really get their comeuppance (you have to hand to Vince in this regard, he always got a satisfying heel payoff) because they're too insecure to play full-on heels for that very reason. They always have to save face somehow. They go from being full-on heels to being some kind of faux Affibly evil or something. Sucks. |
