Why are people spamming WWE and telling them to bring Punk back when he's the one who chose to leave? Because it takes two to tango. (And Punk isn't on every social media site like WWE)

One thing to keep in mind: Punk is not a stupid man. He knows the reactions the crowds have been handing the shows lately. He knows the intense Bryan roll going and he knows 90% of the rest of the shows are being crapped on. Here's the thing - you can say all you want about how the crowds and their likes/dislikes aren't the same as the general viewer (hence why Cena makes them millions even though he's often booed heavily), but think about it; eventually, crowds hijacking shows the way they have been are going to cause a loss of the casual viewer too, who don't enjoy watching three hours of people shitting on the event. And with him gone, that will intensify, I guarantee it. Whether it was part of whatever plans he has, there is no doubt in my mind he knows what's coming in that regard and I think in some diagonal way, he's wanting to help force WWE's hand on this stuff. Even better, WWE has cornered itself without escape on it. There's no putting the cat back into the bag, the emergence of social media and their promotion of it has ensured that those crowds won't be killed off anytime soon without some drastic changes.

I agree and have basically said the same thing. The only fans actually being seen and heard are the one's bemoaning WWE's short-sightedness. The perception is the reality. WWE can continue to push what they want based on a fanbase with no discernible physical presence, but for the first time ever, the televised and PPV audiences are creating the picture that basically everyone is disillusioned with WWE.

Bingo. And they absolutely can't go mid-90's "bizzarroworld" on commentary every week. Casual viewer shows interest, and they hear the crowd booing and commentators playing off of them, that's one thing. They tune in the next week and see the same thing, and it's going to get a foothold. As long as I've watched wrestling, boom periods and "getting over" is Pavlovian to a large extent. It work in reverse the same way. Crowds crap on you constantly, and you become less "cool". Hardcore fans may still appreciate you, they may still tune in, but if the goal, the stated goal, is casual fans, then you can't risk them tuning out because you've picked your model and stuck with it. New Generation bit them in the ass and almost ruined them because they were in the "we're right" mindset. They're in that mindset now, where they'll "make someone important" and "push them", but always make sure to remind the casual viewer via commentary that "X is sure no Y, now Y is a STAR!" Bret and Shawn were "pushed", but how many monsters did Vince bring in and try to push as the "real" stars, play them up and talk them up as being so incredibly special, when fans just weren't buying it, or paying to see it?

That's exactly why I likened this year's Royal Rumble to the 1995 King of the Ring.

Right now, fans at the NXT Tapings at Full Sail are trying to hijack the show with "CM Punk" chants, and security are taking away "CM Punk" signs.

Right now, fans at the NXT Tapings at Full Sail are trying to hijack the show with "CM Punk" chants, and security are taking away "CM Punk" signs. Memo to WWE: The best way to deal with this is to have someone (preferably Daniel Bryan) cut a very complimentary promo on Punk Monday night. Something to the effect of "take all the time you need, buddy. You're welcome any time you want to come back." Make it clear that he's leaving of his own choice, but don't bury him. Don't bring attention to signs and chants, but don't outlaw them either. If they try to bury him on Monday, or have Hunter say "CM Punk screwed you" or some variation of the "Austin took his ball and went home speech", the crowd will shit all over it. But I have a sinking feeling that is what they are going to do...

So does anyone here genuinely think this is the end of CM Punk and WWE? Because I don't at all, which makes this HUGE NEWS-MAKING EVENT (68 pages!!) seem less earth-shattering. Austin returned after he walked out. Punk re-signed after the Pipebomb and returned soon after MITB 2011. Bryan was re-signed just months after his release. I just don't see how this is a big deal yet. Am I just too cynical or jaded or blind to something else? I'm not calling this a work, I am just saying that it's tough to feel awed by it when I figure Punk will be back in no time at all. I have seen retrospectives of Punk's WWE career written and dramatic Photoshops made, and it just feels so premature--tempest in a teacup kind of stuff until some time passes or we have more information.

This is like the pipebomb angle done right, only this isn't a work.
Everything intriguing about wrestling right now has nothing to do with what's going on in the ring.
