Specificity. If she wanted Rarity to pull back on the designs, then she should have stated exactly what she wanted, instead of going, "Here, fix this by tomorrow." As seen in Suited for Success, Rarity has no problems (okay, maybe some) when it comes to meeting the customer's specific needs. And given the short timetable, "fixing" wouldn't have put that big of a dent in Rarity's otherwise hectic schedule. Rarity showed zero empathy afterwards (see bolded above) Well as we saw, revamping those costume had no major effect on her overall schedule. And she couldn't exactly comment on a play that she didn't see. Dammit, I wanted to get out of this!

You all have valid points either way on this discussion. As for me...hovering around an 8 for the episode. Also is it me or did Luna sound more like Celestia at the end of the ep? We know both Tabitha and Nicole worked on this ep, as Cheerilee talked. And I think that they gave Sapphire Shores those workout pants because they didn't want to make a cutie mark for her (since I don't think they revealed it in "A Dog And Pony Show") And GreyScaleLJH...no, the fro mane isn't yours tonight. Saphhire's is.

Someone who doesn't watch the show might look at that picture and assume Rarity was Sweetie Belle's mother.

At least she wanted to see it after she was done with the job

Someone who doesn't watch the show might look at that picture and assume Rarity was Sweetie Belle's mother. Hell, considering how we don't even see the parents (beyond the like two appearances), that's not impossible.

You don't really go around throwing out your little sister's projects just because they don't meet your standards either. She wanted to help, yes, but that help could have been in the realm of her sister wanted, rather than what she wanted. She thought she was doing what was best, but what she ended up doing was confirming that her sister would never be good enough to come out of her shadow. Just because you have good intentions doesn't mean you can't end up making someone else feel bad, and her response to Sweetie Belle's frustration was basically "Oh, at least they liked the costumes!" Specificity. If she wanted Rarity to pull back on the designs, then she should have stated exactly what she wanted, instead of going, "Here, fix this by tomorrow." As seen in Suited for Success, Rarity has no problems (okay, maybe some) when it comes to meeting the customer's specific needs. Perspective, part of being a business is to anticipate what they might want even when you're not given instructions on every single detail. She had what Sweetie Belle tried to do on her ownto go off of. Regardless of how she felt about the designs, she could have kept in mind that it was her sister's project and she wanted to do it her way and she just needed a little help with one part of it, rather than spending time quibbling about ribbon color. Besides that, we saw in Sisterhooves Social that Rarity has a tendency to get more wrapped up in what she wants than what's best for her sister (even reducing her to hard labor in Look Before You Sleep), so it's not unreasonable to assume that she didn't even take those thoughts into account when making them. And SB is still just a kid trying to figure out what she's good at. You've got to allow her frustration when all her hard work gets ignored.

What this episode was missing: a song that was a homage to these three things combined.
Maybe next Halloween ep.

As much as Rarity knows her own sister, she's not a mind reader. And when designing customized pieces, you gotta tell the seamstress everything. You can't just walk into a tailor shop and say, "gimme a suit" and then complain when it's the wrong color.

You can't just walk into a tailor shop and say, "gimme a suit" and then complain when it's the wrong color. But if you go in there with a vague design of what you want, then you can complain if what you get isn't anything like it. And regardless about the quality of the dress, it doesn't change Rarity's fairly flippant response to SB being upset about the play. Even if the complaint was childish, it does no good to prance away waxing about how good your contribution to it was when she's clearly upset. That's just basic empathy.

That headpiece was inspired by Rarity's trip to the Power Ponies dimension, wasn't it?
