One think I hated when I worked graveyard shift, Midnight to 7 AM, is that when I got off work I would hit the local convenience store to get some beer. You won't believe some of the judgmental looks you get for buying booze at 7:30 in the morn, like you are some type of wino or something. What kind of paradise do you live in where you can buy beer at 730am??? I remember going golfing with a guy from work, we got paired up with a father and son. Now me and the guy from work purposely booked the tee time, so we could buy beer, because you can't sell it before 11am. So we get paired up, start drinking and of course they question us, "hey, we work shift work. You think it's Monday, but it's Saturday morning to us. What do you do?" "We're unemployed" They eventually stopped talking to us altogether, when after the more we drank, the better we gofled and when we informed the dad his ball was about 250 yards further behind him than he thought. They were not impressed.

I very rarely have to work weekends and when I do have to work one I can take a day off in lieu.
I work 9-5, the only thing I dislike is leaving when it is dark during the winter.

I work from 10 am until anywhere from 3 to 6 PM. 6 days a week, tuesday through sunday. I like that I get roughly 40 hrs a week. I like that I have evenings free. I like that I can still reasonably party the night before a shift because I can sleep until 9 am.
That said, I feel tired when I'm off. I don't get enough rest with one day off. I wish I could sleep later sometimes. Energy shots help. I get one for 99 cents every morning.

Well, I actually pulled a CM Punk & quit my job today screaming on my way out that I'm sick of being treated like a f***ing slave. I was tired of being treated like dirt after all I did for that place. And my hours were usually always shit. Would have to wake up 6am on Sunday usually to go in for 7am. I never had a set schedule week to week & it was very exhausting. Would have to work every single holiday as well. And I would have worked all day on Father's Day too & would have missed family dinner. I did it for 4 years straight with almost no time off at all in all those years. It was time to move on, & I have a few health problems that I need to take care of before I start a job somewhere else.

I guess because everyone in my family works shift work or irregular hours, I've never gotten missing family things that MUST OCCUR on the day as an excuse to miss things. As far back as kindergarten, and my mom always tells this story, the teacher hauled her in to tell her what a horrible liar I was for telling the other kids the Easter Bunny had already been to my house, even though it was before Easter. My mom said, "His father and I both work shift work, the Easter Bunny comes when we say he comes" It's always worked that way. Dad is on days Christmas Day? Christmas happens the night or two before. I'm on nights Mom's birthday? We have dinner the next available time. I don't get people so wrapped up in the day and not the true meaning of it, being together on any given day.......My dad has commented if he wanted a day off for dinner, his boss would grant that and he could have them all off after that too, because he would be fired. The rest of your reasons, that's fine, I just don't get "missing holidays". Different experiences, I guess.

Good call, Cole. I'm not the only one who creates their own holidays. Hey, if my place wants me to work Christmas, New Year's, the Fourth...I'm there. Use that overtime money to create my own holidays.
Cons of my job: 12-hour days. Pros: 3-day weekends.

And also the holidays is usually the only times of the year I see my relatives. I rarely see them on non holidays unless something special is happening on a regular day. The main reason was that I was just sick of being treated like shit all the time there. I just couldn't take being taken advantage of anymore. I felt like I was treated more like an object that my manager felt was programmed to do things for her, than being treated like a human. And the hours were f***ing garbage every week. It was just too exhausting with the random week to week hours instead of a set schedule.

Sorry if you felt I was criticizing you, I didn't mean it to come across that way, even if it really seems like it. Sort of used you as a jumping off point for a rant, it wasn't directed at you specifically, it's just something that irks me, since I myself, rarely get the actual holiday off. I even had the conversation at work, "Cole doesn't have a family, he can work". I said, "I don't have a wife and kids, I still have a family and we have plans, so you can stay on shift".

I didn't take it as you criticizing me, I just wanted to say that that was only a small part of the reason I left my job. There were tons of other reasons too. I understand though that some don't view the holidays as being as important to one person while it can be to another. I prefer to be off on the Holidays because those are the only few times of the year that I see my relatives. If I'm always working all day on each Holiday, I'd never see them ever, since I rarely see them on ordinary days like I said in my previous post.

I tried to make it explicit in the original thing I said, I got your other reasons, but argued the holiday thing and you responded, so I just wanted to make it clear. Internet, hard to tell emotions and intent and all that. I got you. No worries.
