So, the writer of Pacific Rim was able to get his pilot script picked up. The basic plot followed a notorious thief taken from prison to instead serve the power obsessed Pharaoh. From there, it seemed like they were hoping for their own type of Game of Thrones thing (My guess).
Fox wanted it. They straight up skipped the pilot part and ordered thirteen episodes. So they filmed a full pilot. Filmed three episodes. Wrote thirteen scripts, plus a show "bible." Contracted the cast.
And it's already cancelled. Poof. Gone.
The only thing to come out...the trailer hyping it's now never coming debut:
Fox was sourced as wanting to change up the way they dealt with pilot season...but this is just bizarre. To just "change their minds" mid-stream and cancel something that has obviously had some money put into it. I have no clue what's going on there...but it's interesting. Apparently, there was anger about the 'white-washing' of the cast but I don't feel that's what happened.
Just the same, this feels like something where the story behind the scene could be just as entertaining as the ones we get on screen.
As for Writer Travis Beacham:
Although, I'm wondering if more will come out soon since...
Just joking.

This just reminds me of something that may or may not be true. Wasn't there some show on Fox in the mid-90s that got cancelled during the first commercial break of the pilot episode? Obviously, the rest of the pilot episode was allowed to run, but I remember hearing something like this once. Am I just imagining this?

It wouldn't be shocking, as things like that have happened before, often if syndication markets refuse to air the show anymore if it looks like a massive dud.

You may be thinking of the show Turn-On which aired on ABC in 1969. It was pulled during it's first commercial break by affiliates for it's frank subject matter. ( link) I think Hieroglyph may actually be a casualty of studio politics. Kevin Reilly was the head of Fox network programming and green lighted the show. He recently departed under circumstances that may not have been the best of terms. As often the case new executives tend to try and make their mark with their own programming.

Same with if a program director takes over a radio station. They end up getting rid of at least half the people, usually, and bringing in the crew they have worked with elsewhere, or people they can package as "their" successes. A new head chef might want to go through the menu and prune off a good portion to replace with their signature dishes or stuff they see as a new identity for the restaurant. Everyone wants their own successes, and sometimes their ego has casualties, even if their motives are easy to understand.

Trailer looks pretty good, I would definitely have given it a go.
Odd choice to cancel without even giving it a chance to air. Surely it's better to give it a go than spend out and cancel with stuff already filmed? Even if you cut it to 6 eps and use it as filler......
Seems there must be more to this story......or Fox is just crazy wasteful

As stated, Kevin Reilly, the executive that green lit this resigned so I bet there is some internal politics about not keeping one of his shows. Not unlike the Seinfeld story arc where the new head of NBC doesn't pick up Jerry's pilot. However, FOX did get burned a few years ago on another straight to series sci-fi, Terra Nova. High production cost makes it easier to say let's not make more.

Meh, that sucks for him, but none of those actors are even in the same ball park as the actors from GoT

John Rhys-Davies is most certainly on the level with the GOT actors.
