The Magics one not really getting good reviews I feel like this critique is happening more frequently with recent 30 for 30s. The worst offender was obviously "Trojan War", which was basically a University of Southern California-produced piece of public relations more than it was a documentary, but the guilty parties have included "The '85 Bears", "Four Falls of Buffalo", and "Bad Boys" - films that have absolved teams of their sins and cast aside some of the more upsetting or lecherous moments to instead make those who didn't like/disagreed with/rooted against them out to be the morally corrupt. The strongest 30 for 30s to discuss individual teams are always the ones that aren't afraid to peel back the Band-Aid and poke at the wound. That's what separates "Pony Excess" from "The U". While the parties in "Pony Excess" admit culpability and take blame and the talking heads featured in the documentary aren't afraid to acknowledge the seedier parts of the Southern Methodist football past, those in "The U" point the finger at everyone they can - the media, rival fans, opposing players, stodgy old white people, whoever - to make it seem like it's anyone's fault but theirs that they were getting into trouble off the field and hated on the field.

The four falls of Buffalo and the 85 Bears just didn't move the needle for me. I couldnt even finish them. Trojan War I will agree was pretty shallow. I've seen YouTube videos with more investigative depth. I forgave Trojan War chiefly bc of the feature on the greatest championship game ever played in the 2006 BCS title game.

My utter hatred of "Four Days in October" must resurface once again when we are discussing bad or fluff documentaries from this franchise. Not because I'm a Yankee fan (Lord knows I ain't!) but because there's two sides to the story... and I want to hear Kevin Brown call himself "horseshit" again. I mean, as you said it with "Pony Excess", they went out their way to show that the entire Southwest Conference, including Rice, cheated, and with "Winning Time", they could've ended with the Pacers beating the Knicks in the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals but instead chose to end in 1999, when the Knicks beat the Pacers in the ECF. Balance is key, and sometimes, you must admit there is not a happy ending, no matter how much you want to feel otherwise. I must ask; will they mention Bash at the Beach 1994 in the Magic documentary? EDIT: And speaking of NBA documentaries, did anybody see the short, "Slick, Nancy, and the Telethon?"

This Magic Moment needs to show this clip from Baseketball when talking about Shaquille O'Neal leaving for The Lakers.

Was there ever any conspiracy theories about the Orlando Magic winning the draft lottery? I would think there would be some people who would be skeptical about this thinking that the NBA was giving their newest expansion team a chance at relevance in their inaugural season.

Always felt the Magic would've won a title with Shaq & Penny. Probably in 1998

Watching this 30 for 30 just makes me feel so thankful for the Magic low balling Shaq in 1996. He probably never would have gotten to LA and played for the Lakers. Two fates of franchises changed that summer.

Caught the last half of it. Tell me that Shaq didn't just say... * {Spoiler}Something along the lines that he wishes there was a rule where you had to stay with the team you were drafted with. The same Shaq that played for nearly a quarter of all the NBA teams.... *Then again I was half asleep when I heard that. Also I will unspoiler in a week or two, I just thought it was so funny I didn't want to ruin anything for anyone.

I haven't watched it, {Spoiler}oh man if he did say that, fitting that it was aired a day after Kobe Bryant's last game.

The Magics one not really getting good reviews I mean this was straight forward, Magic had the chance to become a dynasty but everything went to hell when they low balled Shaq and he left. - Penny got hurt and got traded - They tried to do a big 3 in 2000 w/McGrady, Hill and Duncan. Only Hill came over, but he spent most of his time there hurt. McGrady gets traded in 2004. - They luck out and get the top pick to select Howard, only for him to leave If everything went according to plan, they should have won at least one championship. Maybe another two once Jordan retired in '98.

The Magic one wasn't bad, but Penny is too nice and Shaq too jovial for any real conflict. And they didn't really explore what happened to everyone other than Shaq afterward.

"This Magic Moment" was fine but it was just that when it could have been so much more. I don't know what exactly was missing but something was.
I think my biggest critique of the documentary was just how Shaq-centric it was. The film was supposed to be about the rise and fall of the Orlando Magic and it instead turned out to be SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ pennynickandersonbrianhill SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ SHAQ. I really thought we'd get a lot more about how much of a cultural phenomenon that team was and how they helped the NBA bridge the gap during Michael Jordan's first retirement. Not to sound like Buzzfeed clickbait but as a child of the 1990s, either you owned Magic gear or knew about a dozen people who owned Magic gear. They were the coolest team in sports. But instead all we got was how much SHAQ was a cultural phenomenon and how SHAQ helped the NBA bridge that gap.
The fact that it was executive produced by Shaquille O'Neal also explains a lot about how nice it was to him and how much revisionist history there was about the way he fled Orlando. For example, it grossly underplayed how petty he was and how jealous he got anytime somebody mentioned Penny Hardaway's name, focusing about 30 seconds on that Reebok commercial with Li'l Penny and nothing more. As for his departure, the Los Angeles Lakers were serious suitors from basically the middle of the 1995-96 season and it was clear that if Shaq flew out of town, his only landing spot would be the Lakers. But "This Magic Moment" makes it seems like the Lakers came in at the 11th hour and that Jerry West was able to pull off a miracle after trading away Vlade Divac, instead of what really happened, which was that Orlando low-balled Shaq on their first offer and he never gave them a second chance.
Again, it was good, but as far too many 30 for 30s have been recently, it was far too complimentary and not nearly critical enough.

Legit question on the 30 for 30 episodes. Is there a legal way to watch all of these in their entirety? I know they sell these in season box sets, was just wondering if any of the Netflix type sites had them available. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
