The fact that it was executive produced by Shaquille O'Neal also explains a lot about how nice it was to him and how much revisionist history there was about the way he fled Orlando. For example, it grossly underplayed how petty he was and how jealous he got anytime somebody mentioned Penny Hardaway's name, focusing about 30 seconds on that Reebok commercial with Li'l Penny and nothing more. As for his departure, the Los Angeles Lakers were serious suitors from basically the middle of the 1995-96 season and it was clear that if Shaq flew out of town, his only landing spot would be the Lakers. But "This Magic Moment" makes it seems like the Lakers came in at the 11th hour and that Jerry West was able to pull off a miracle after trading away Vlade Divac, instead of what really happened, which was that Orlando low-balled Shaq on their first offer and he never gave them a second chance. Again, it was good, but as far too many 30 for 30s have been recently, it was far too complimentary and not nearly critical enough. I will say watching it, it makes me really want to see an honest retrospective on Shaq because that became a reoccurring theme in his career. It happened with the Magic, it happened with the Lakers, and it happened again with the Heat.

Yeah, and they massively underplayed how dominate Hakeem Olajuwon was in the 95 Finals and that whole playoffs. You had Shaq say that he thought he was going to get in Hakeem's head, and that Hakeem actually got into his, but that was it. The story of that documentary was that if Nick Anderson made the free throws, the Magic would have won, they just ignore that Olajuwon dominated Shaq in the Finals. They should have at least thrown in something like "And Houston was led by Hakeem Olajuwon who put on one of the greatest postseasons by any player."

I caught a few moments of "This Magic Moment" and another Shaquille O'Neal part that I'd forgotten about caught my eye. After Orlando wins the 1992 Draft Lottery and makes it crystal clear that they intend to draft O'Neal first overall, Shaq and his agent play this "will-they-or-won't-they" game, hemming and hawing and refusing to commit to the Magic. And in the film, Shaq has the gall to say that it was all because he's a superstitious guy and he refused to believe he was going to be the first pick and thought it would be Christian Laettner. That's an outright lie and he knows it and he could get away with it because he was an executive producer.
That should have been the sign to Magic fans that at the first chance he got, Shaq was out the door. He can pretend it was because he was low-balled or hurt by the contract negotiation process but Shaquille O'Neal was leaving Orlando the minute his contract expired in 1996. No amount of money would have kept him in central Florida. He can look back on it now and call it a mistake but from the moment that ping-pong ball bounced Orlando's way, Shaq and his agent were doing everything in their power to leverage a way out of a Magic uniform and ideally into Laker purple and gold.

Hearing Ahmad Rashad say he thought that after the Magic won the Eastern Conference Finals it was a foregone conclusion that they would beat the Rockets makes me wonder if he even remembers the 1995 NBA Playoffs. The Rockets may have been a 6th seed but the Western Conference was much better than the Eastern Conference. The Rockets were also defending champions who had fought off elimination time and time again showing they knew how to win big games. After Game 1 of the NBA Finals I knew the Rockets were winning the championship.

During tonight's airing of "Four Days in October", all references to game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series - "The Bloody Sock Game" - were edited out. And it's absolutely gutless. ESPN is now literally editing history to suit their agenda because they had a messy breakup with a former employee.
ESPN issued a statement a few moments ago basically saying that the softball game they had been airing prior to "Four Days in October" ran long, so they had to edit out a portion of the film, and it's mere coincidence that the chunk they edited out was focused on Curt Schilling.

Slightly O/T but on Sunday the 30 for 30 episode of Hillsborough will be shown here in the UK on bbc2. The documentary had been banned from being shown in the uk due to the recent tribunal case relating to the tragedy.

A new 30 for 30 short has come out about how the NBA's Iron Man (has the most consecutive games streak) AC Green stayed a virgin throughout his NBA career.

The BBC has finally aired Hillsborough. They weren't allowed to broadcast it whilst the trial was ongoing but now that is over and justice has been done, they are allowed. They edited it slightly by adding a bit at the end with footage of the recent trial and the decision. It's on the BBC iPlayer for the next few weeks. As it's been humid here recently and I've been dehydrated, I can't bring myself to watch it yet and sob about two pints out of my body.

The pure callousness of the elite during that time is nauseating. And yet, some of those officials and pundits still have jobs.

John Motson for example was told by the Police about "fans without tickets", he trusted the police as a reliable source and so he reported it at the time. It was an error I'm sure he regrets but the difference is, he didn't continue saying it for years after the tragedy. And let's be honest, as rampant as football hooliganism was during that time, it wasn't exactly hard to convince people that it was to blame.

Watched Hillsborough again on Sunday night and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember the scene about the Policeman's mental breakdown at the traffic crossing being in the original Hillsborough documentary. Unless it was added with all the new footage at the end?
