So it wasnt until around 1996-1997 when the Attitude Era began when the lines become blurred and Face/Face and heel/heel matches were more common, during the Hulkamania and New Generation eras they were pretty rare as the faces stuck with the faces and the heels stuck with the heels.
So how many can you think of that were prominent, and I mean either PPV/TV (Superstars, RAW, SNME etc) rather than house show circuit such as MSG shows etc other than the big obvious ones such as Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior, Davey Boy Smith vs Bret Hart, Pier vs Hart etc.??

One of my favourite Heel vs. Heel matches was a slugfest that Steve Austin had with Vader on a 1996 RAW.

I guess face vs face seemed more common and easier to do than heel vs heel as you can gurantee the crowd would be invested either way and I guess a babyface losing to another babyface doesnt hurt the loser too much. One of the earlier heel vs heel matches that stands out is Jake Roberts vs Randy Savage on SNME in 1986

Summerslam 1992 had 2 face vs face matches and 1 heel vs heel match.

It was actually a very random Rick Martel vs Bastion Booger match from Challenge in 1993 that prompted this thread but a few more would be
The Rockers vs The Harts vs LOD matches from 1990-1991, they all faced each other at some point during this period. I specifically remember the Rockers/LOD match from late 1991 as Shawn was turning heel as I had just become a fan, and of course The Rockers/Harts from the SNME taping.
Yokozuna vs Mabel from a 1995 In Your House was pretty random and stuck out to me as odd, they had a back story as to why there was a match but again, it was rare for heel vs heel.

Triple H vs. Kurt Angle from Royal Rumble 2001.
Kurt Angle vs. JBL on Smackdown in early 2005.

X-Pac vs. Billy Kidman at Invasion. Where everyone else in the WWF automatically turned babyface, X-Pac still got the heat!

I wouldn't really class anything post 1996 as rare. The lines were blurred and it was ultra common at that point. I'm talking from 1984-1996

WCW had matches like these much more prominently than WWE.
One of my favorite PPV's was StarrCade '89: Future Shock because of how many heel vs. heel and face vs. face matches there were.
Road Warriors vs. Steiners Doom vs. Samoan SWAT Team Lex Luger vs. Great Muta Ric Flair vs. Sting
A lot of the Flair matches qualify because even as a babyface, he was kind of still the same character.
Flair vs. Rude Iron Man match. Flair vs. Vader from SC '93

Vinnie Vegas and DDP vs. Tex Slazenger and Shanghai Pierce. I have no idea why that match has always stuck out to me but it definitely has.

Carlito and Randy Orton (as heels) had a pretty good match on Raw several years back.
And Melina vs Beth Phoenix (first match, Raw) they were both heels.

King Mabel and Yokozuna had a couple of matches. I'm pretty sure one of them was on Raw. Heel versus heel definitely seems more rare, especially back then.

Bryan Danielson vs Alex Shelley, was one I saw that was great as well as Wade Barrett Vs Sheamus.
I've not seen any really bad Heel Vs Heel matches.

While they didn't actually ever face each other that I know of, I did like that Triple H and JBL were played as having no love for one another while they were holding both their respective brands in a stranglehold.

Shortly before WrestleMania, Jeff Jarrett was set to defend his title on a Sunday Night special, I think against Barry Horowitz or some other jobber. Bob Backlund attacked the opponent, Jarrett celebrated, but then Backlund signed the contract himself for the match.
