The WWE's reliance on John Cena is very similar to your favorite band "selling out." They found a formula that sells and would rather stick to that than put on a decent wrestling show much the same as bands that find "mainstream success" stick to their new sound rather than experiment. I truly believe that those in the WWE currently could put on a groundbreaking, risky, highly entertaining product again, but it's safer, easier, and probably more profitable to just keep taking the money of parents of young children who idolize John Cena. They will milk that cow until it dies.

It's a different beast.
2006 Cena was a terrible wrestler being pushed over significantly better guys like an unstoppable superman, and the audience was fresh and determined to express their displeasure.
2014 Cena is virtually the same, but loses a little more, can carry a match, and much of the audience has just given up hope he'll go away.
