World Series prediction: Indians over Nationals
American League is so tough to call because there are legitimately three bad teams. That's all. You can make a playoff argument for everybody else.

Fingers crossed Tanaka plays like he did last year before the injury

Even though my favorite team is (probably) going to finish last in the division and they have absolutely nothing going for them, I am so happy that the greatest sport known to mankind is finally back.

Such a beautiful day for a ball game. I wonder if I go to the park with a mitt and a ball would someone play catch with me.

Fingers crossed Tanaka plays like he did last year before the injury His velocity hasn't really been good this spring. Has struggled to hit 90 at times.

Though man, after years of Jeter, it's nice having a real defensive stud in the middle infield again. Especially after losing Cano to Seattle.

Seriously, Tanaka wasted almost a year of everyone's time trying to rehab through a torn elbow. He should have gotten the surgery and be done with it. He reported discomfort in July, had he gotten the surgery then you could make an argument for a late-Summer/late season return, at least for a handful of starts to see where he's at. Now the most likely outcome is getting the surgery now, missing all of this season and probably some of next. Not to mention it takes about 2 full years to come back from it.

I'm not sure how much of that was on the Yankees not wanting their hot Japanese star to have TJ surgery the year they signed him and how much of it was on Tanaka being stubborn about not wanting the surgery.

Sounds like he went to 3 doctors and they all told him surgery wasn't necessary. But honestly...how many people can pitch through a torn elbow, no matter how small the tear was? Get it done, and come back. Between the surgery, rehab, and getting back to where you were, you're looking at 12-18 months. Rehabbing and pitching through it essentially cost him 9 months. Add to that he stunk in Spring Training.

He did have three doctors recommend rehab, and, end of the day, it's his choice, not the Yankees. Some Mets fans were stupidly raging against the team for not forcing Zach Wheeler to get Tommy John earlier than he got it (y'know, BEFORE the ligament tore, apparently), as if the Mets could force a guy to get invasive surgery before it's medically necessary.
There's more of an argument for Tanaka because there's a partial tear there already, but you can't blame a guy for not wanting surgery until it's totally necessary.

My Mets Predictions before first pitch 1) MATT HARVEY will return to form, but run support problems keep him out of the cy young race. 15-8 2) JAKE DeGrom will not be a fluke 3) BARTOLO COLON NOT Dillon Gee will lose his rotation spot to Syndergaard and will be traded mid-season for more bullpen help. 4) All defensive issues with WILMER FLORES will be forgiven as he hits .280 and 15 HR's. 5) TRAVIS D'ARNAUD will struggle in April, but then turn it around. 6) DAVID WRIGHT's batting average will return to form but not his power. He'll top off at 15 HR's if all goes well 7) DUDA and GRANDERSON will both hit 30 hrs, but have really low batting averages 8) The mind boggling hard-on for JUAN LAGARES goes flaccid as he proves to just be at best a mediocre player 9) There will be an active LGBT mets fan base attending citi filed regularly wearing anti Daniel Murphy shirts 10) Only Matt Harvey and Jake Degrom will be named all-stars 11) 84-78 2nd Place NL East

I'll do mine Mets predictions: -Harvey will be top 3 in Cy Young voting -deGrom won't be a fluke -Niese will be surprisingly solid -Gee gets traded -Parnell will be the closer in the second half -d'Arnaud breaks out and has a fantastic year. -Lagares will have his best offensive season ever while stealing ALL THE HOMERS. -87-75, 2nd place and wild card

Red Sox centerfielder Mookie Betts opens the top of the third with a solo home run off of Cole Hamels.
The last time I was this overwhelmingly excited about a Red Sox prospect, Will Middlebrooks was tearing the cover off of the ball in spring 2012. So while I am over the moon for Betts, I'll temper expectations for now and just say that he COULD be the next Willie Mays, instead of saying he WILL be.
