Red Sox centerfielder Mookie Betts opens the top of the third with a solo home run off of Cole Hamels. The last time I was this overwhelmingly excited about a Red Sox prospect, Will Middlebrooks was tearing the cover off of the ball in spring 2012. So while I am over the moon for Betts, I'll temper expectations for now and just say that he COULD be the next Willie Mays, instead of saying he WILL be. Meanwhile, Cole Hamels has thrown 64 pitches through 3 innings and has alloawed 2 solo HRs. Why do I get a feeling Philly will regret their asinine trade demands?

Meanwhile, Cole Hamels has thrown 64 pitches through 3 innings and has alloawed 2 solo HRs. Why do I get a feeling Philly will regret their asinine trade demands? Unless Philadelphia is dealing Hamels for pennies on the dollar, I want no part of him in a Red Sox uniform. He's the definition of a National League pitcher. His stats against American League competition are no accident. Twenty-nine starts and 180.1 innings with a 4.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .279 BAA, and .325 OBPA. That's basically a full season, so it's not like someone can argue that it's a small sample size. On top of everything else, he's 31 years old and he's due $70.5 million through the end of the 2018 season. Didn't the Red Sox just balk at paying Jon Lester an exorbitant sum of money because he's a pitcher in his 30s? Why would the team cut ties with Lester only send away assets to acquire a lesser pitcher? I mean, Betts is a billion times better than Middlebrooks. I'm sure Betts will be better, I'm just saying that I tend to get a bit enraptured about Red Sox prospects who are producing at the major league level. Like, I know now that Will Middlebrooks sucks, but part of me will always look at his first 40 games in 2012, when he hit .331/.368/.592/.960 with 10 doubles and nine home runs, and I'd still think, "He could replicate that!"

The Braves and Marlins are playing in Miami.
Miami's ballpark has a retractable roof.
The roof is open.
The game is currently in a rain delay.

Colon is looking pretty good today. Sherzer is nasty, though.

As someone who has Max Scherzer on his fantasy team, all I can say is f*** you, Ian Desmond.

Hanley Ramirez is quickly reminding Red Sox fans of the other Ramirez who patrolled left field in a Boston uniform.
