I liked A-Ry back in 2011, 2012, I really did. Thought he had charisma and wasn't half as bad as people seemed to make him out to be but shit the bed, he's annoying in the booth. Why oh why would anyone give a flying f*** what he thinks, really? Calling people like Itami, "kid" and banging on about what it takes to accomplish things in WWE. He's never accomplished shit! Had a red hot angle with The Miz but then told Vickie Guerrero something had died in her gob and then didn't do much else. Piss off you condescending twat.

Oh man, I never tire of hearing Alex Riley refer to Itami as some unproven rookie. Hoping one day he just walks up to the commentary booth, pulls Riley out and kicks him to oblivion the way he did to Eddie Edwards in that famous "Don't kick KENTA" vid.

I actually still like Alex Riley and enjoy his commentary for the most part. Much better than Jason Albert, who seems to bring very little insight (despite having way more experience than A-Ry).

Imo, Albert doesn't make enough appearances to really be good or bad. I like the fact that this commentary gig has allowed Alex Riley to prove that he has a "personality", but like others in the thread, I hate how he refers to Hideo Itami (née KENTA) and others as unproven rookies. As a fan, I dislike his commentary because he IS annoying at times and I hate the company for going out of their way to make him insignificant (even on a jobber level) and driving him to this point in the first place. It's obvious how much he would rather be wrestling, so yes, let Hideo kick the ever living shit out of him if it means humbling him and shutting him up. I want my Alex Riley back, the guy who was seen and not heard and had the WWE Universe in the palm of his hand. There was a time when A-Ry had "smark cred", and that's pretty much been destroyed by his commentary gig. I will always love Alex Riley as a wrestler. As a commentator, not so much. |

Nxt is pretty much his ceiling for now. Given how Lawler and Cole didn't bother to hide their contempt for Stryker and JBLs obvious dislike of Josh Matthews it appears commentary is a closed shop for anyone under 40. Maybe the current announcers bemoan not being able to wrestle anymore so have a weird issue with anyone who is young enough to wrestle but chooses to commentate.
Either way he's lucky to have Albert there who genuinely seems to be a nice guy. Alas both Albert and Riley are terrible announcers but nxt isn't just about seasoning the in ring talent and I'm sure both will improve over the next few years.

It's crazy they let him undermine their wrestlers and storylines, he's meant to add to a show not detract from it.
WWE have made an effort in portraying certain new signings as big stars which includes acknowledging their past in a variety of ways. So after press conferences have been held, WWE.com articles have been written and titantrons have been made Riley undoes all that work by saying nothing they've done in the past matters because they haven't made it in WWE like he has.
Like I said in the NXT thread the Neville and Zayn storyline is one of the best in years full of subtle developments and nuances, Riley ignored that in favour of shouting nonsense that makes Zayn look bad which in turn harms Neville.
Even though he's f***ing awful there is one tiny plus that he at least seems to be taking his role seriously now rather than mocking co-commentators for actually doing their research.

I thought the guy had a lot of potential in like 2011 but he is ass cheeks as an announcer. He's the dirt worst kind of heel announcer. He treats it like the Playa Haters Ball and just shits on every face with no real thought or reasoning put behind any of his comments. Even if you didn't agree with Bobby Hennan, at least he had clear cut reasons for hating guys like Hogan. Riley is being the voice of dissent for the sole purpose of being the voice of dissent. I'm fine with some Devil's Advocate every now and then but Riley has "go-away" heat which defeats the whole purpose of having a heel announcer.
JBL's pretty bad at this too but at least he gets a chuckle out of me every now and then. Riley just sucks.

He was very annoying. It seemed people only liked him because he might drop in a ROH reference so they could go "hey, Prince Nana, I know him!". |
