LETHAL VS STRONG: THE REMATCH - SIGNED FOR 8/21 IN PHILLY

Ring of Honor Matchmaker Nigel McGuinness has officially announced the rematch of the epic 60 minute time limit draw between ROH World & World Television Champion Jay Lethal & “Mr ROH” Roderick Strong has been signed and it will take place Friday Night August 21, 2015 at the historic 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA.

“Mr ROH” Roderick Strong made a statement at Death Before Dishonor XIII, that he is without a doubt one of the very best wrestlers on the planet. ROH World & World Television Champion Jay Lethal proved that he IS the best wrestler on the planet, which is why he is still champion.

While neither man can lay claim to victory, there were many battles won by both sides. Strong proved over 60 minutes that Lethal could not defeat him, even with the interference of Truth Martini & The H.O.T. Strong proved that he has limitless conditioning and with a few more minutes could have pulled out the victory to become a 2x ROH World Champion. Lethal himself proved to Strong that it is going to take everything he has and much more to remove the championship from his waste.

Roderick Strong is already telling those who will listen that he is amping up his training and will come in even more prepared. Truth Martini has a few comments on the rematch, “Jay Lethal is the undisputed ROH World & World Television Champion for a reason. Roderick Strong you won’t be ready for what he is bringing in Philly!”

Nigel McGuiness has dictated that if Lethal does retain his ROH World Championship in this defense, that he will still be obligated to face reDRagon’s Kyle O’Reilly in San Antonio, TX at All Star Extravaganza live on PPV, Friday September 18. On top of that Lethal is currently scheduled to also defend his ROH World Television Championship against the #1 contender to the title, reDRagon’s Bobby Fish. The pressure is on Lethal right now and Strong could capitalize on a very unique situation to become a 2x ROH World Champion.

McGuinness has also stated that should Roderick Strong defeat Jay Lethal to become the New ROH World Champion, he would then assume the already signed title defense against Kyle O’Reilly on at All Star Extravaganza VII.

Roderick Strong signed a guaranteed non-exclusive one-year contract this past week. He was probably ROH’s biggest star not under contract and WWE did have interest in him, likely for NXT as opposed to the main roster. The new deal will allow him to work all of his indie dates and he can continue working PWG, where he is the champion. A lot of the top ROH wrestlers have contracts that don’t allow them to work PWG. With his signing, I don’t see anyone major at this time that would be leaving for NXT.

ROH needs a womens division, it's too bad they're behind the curve on it now because I remember they were planting seeds for it years ago with Veda Scott and it never went anywhere.

Well, hasn't a lot of the best indy women's talent been wrapped up in SHIMMER and SHINE? I can understand not doing it if they didn't think they were gonna be able to do it right.

Something must have shook their confidence about committing to it. Seemed like they were establishing a nice base with Athena, MsChif and Veda Scott (there were others I'm blanking on) and usually ROH are pretty good at scouting new faces that they could go from there but it probably is more complicated on the other side. Either way I hope it materializes.

Usual ROH afraid to pull the trigger. SCOH V had the perfect opportunity to start an excellent Women of Honor division with Sara Del Rey and Kong, but they flaked on it and gave it no time. I'm sure you could look at every year with them promoting WOH and nothing coming of it.

Also, how is it that Whitmer/Corino is the most compelling part of ROH TV? Whitmer has been fire.

Kayfabe Commentaries announced that they will be launching a new series of DVDs devoted to the history of Ring of Honor, chROHnology with original ROH booker Gabe Sapolsky hosting an interviewing talents from the early era of Ring of Honor.

The announcement of the DVD series reads:

A VIEW FROM RINGSIDE – DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR WEEKEND

Friday marked a personal landmark for me as a wrestling announcer. The main event between Jay Lethal and Roderick Strong for the ROH World Championship represented the first 60-minute draw I called in my career.

At the bell, almost on instinct, the Baltimore crowd briefly asked for “five more minutes” until they collectively realized that both Lethal and Strong had nothing left to give. Instead the crowd showed the two amazing wrestlers the respect they deserved for a remarkable display of athletic competition.

Nothing was settled at “Death Before Dishonor” but I expect many questions to be answered on Friday August 21st in Philadelphia for THE REMATCH for the ROH World Championship as champion Jay Lethal tries to turn back Roderick Strong.

Here are some other observations from the weekend:

Both Lethal and Strong were physically spent but otherwise healthy. Jay did suffer a mildly sprained ankle but Strong was injury-free coming out of the weekend. ACH was sent to a local medical facility for observation following his No Disqualification match against Adam Page. There was concern that he may have suffered a kidney injury but was given a full clearance before competing on Saturday.

reDRagon is one of the top contending tag teams chasing The Addiction for the ROH World Tag Team Championships but both Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish have singles’ title opportunities coming up at All Star Extravaganza on September 18th in San Antonio but each assured me that reDRagon will always be a team, regardless of the singles’ aspirations of each man.

Deepest tag team division in Pro Wrestling? Right here in Ring of Honor. Not since 2010 has ROH presented so many quality tag teams. Champions the Addiction and challengers the Young Bucks, the Kingdom, reDRagon, War Machine, RPG Vice and the Briscoes’ bring an unprecedented level of talent to the tag team ranks. Rumors of new teams wanting to come in and some old teams could be reuniting?

On the Whitmer/Corino situation: Not everyone in ROH likes Corino and what has been described to be as his “baggage” while there are some in the ROH hierarchy who have grown weary of BJ Whitmer and his repeated attempts to goad Steve Corino into a match. Some even think Whitmer knew he was going to miss time with a knee injury and was hoping to get Corino fired or suspended so he could take over on commentary while rehabbing. Either way, I was in a meeting on Saturday and a call on Monday and I made my feelings known about this situation. It has to stop.

That being said, I think BJ Whitmer has not earned enough credit for the job he has done on Adam Page who is poised to break out to the upper half of the card in the second half of 2015. Page has added size and confidence. His in-ring swagger is all Whitmer. Page is a high-profile win away from title contention.

Adam Cole and Dalton Castle had a memorable encounter on Friday and that was the highlight of either man’s weekend. Tough Saturday for both Cole and Castle and each will have important decisions to make in the near future.

Baltimore is known as “Charm City” and famous for Crab Cakes but that town loves CHEESEBURGER!

I had several conversations with two Maryland based wrestlers who have been in the news as of late. Both have incredibly bright futures and will compete in Ring of Honor someday.

Details on the next ROH Tryout Camp will be released soon as well as the latest DVD compilation that was worked on over the weekend.
