A VIEW FROM RINGSIDE - NASHVILLE

Ring of Honor returned to Nashville for the first TV taping of the 2015. As I sat ringside for the four shows, here are some of my observations. A common theme you will here in this recap is “you have to see it for yourself” to truly appreciate the big moments that made this taping so special.

How would Alberto El Patrón’s debut for ROH go? What was his mindset? What were his goals? Would he be ready for the style of competition that can only be found in Ring of Honor? I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. First, Alberto is a consummate gentleman. He was gracious and accommodating to autograph requests and came in to Nashville in great shape.

When Alberto came out, he was genuinely moved by the reaction he got from the fans. Over the past few years, whether it was Matt Hardy or AJ Styles, when a big star from another promotion comes to ROH, they are taken aback by the passion and energy of a Ring of Honor crowd but El Patrón’s reaction showed me that he had no idea what to expect when he came through the curtain but fed off the energy of the audience. He’s a huge star and had his “working boots” on, for sure.

Jay Lethal is a top guy, a huge star and looks to make the ROH World Television Championship the most prominent title defending in the company. But, the chip on his shoulder he is carrying is enormous and some would say it could lead to his inevitable demise. I believe the best is yet to come from Lethal and the chip will only make his stronger.

Adam Cole left more questions than answers, to say the least.

The Top Prospect Tournament featured the most diverse field ever and the matches were competitive and entertaining. Will the fourth winner in a row come from the New England area?

Last year’s Top Prospect winner, Hanson, got 2015 off to a rousing start. He starts the year swimming with sharks and will not be able to sneak up on anyone any longer. War Beard has an enormous target on him right now.

Speaking of targets, everyone wants ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe. Not only those who want to unseat him from his perch atop Ring of Honor but the Kingdom looks to destroy Briscoe as well. Something has to give between the Kingdom and the Briscoe Brothers. It can’t go on much longer like it is.

Wait until you see what ODB does and how she is received by the fans in Nashville!

Matches for the 13th Anniversary event on Sunday, March 1st on Pay-per-View will come into focus over the next few weeks on TV. Not only that, the Road to Vegas will be competitive as well as ROH has big cards set up on the Winter Warriors tour.

I had an off-the-record conversation with a main event player in ROH who told me that big changes may be forthcoming for him. I provided some advice on how to proceed but I feel confident that he’ll make the right decision.

It was clear to me at ringside that the next four weeks of Ring of Honor Television are “can’t miss” episodes. I would ask that anyone who reads this to spread the word about the quality of these shows. Tell your friends… anyone who calls themselves a wrestling fan. Trust me! They’ll thank you.

And I thank you as well. Thank you to the fans in Nashville and thank you to all the fans around the world that made 2014 a fantastic year for ROH. The best is yet to come in 2015.

{Spoiler}We may have turned the page on a new year, but it was made crystal clear in Nashville that the rivalry between The Kingdom and The Briscoes is FAR from forgotten. With Bennett and Maria still flaunting their bogus "Title of Love" and Matt Taven to back them up, The Kingdom continue to antagonize Dem Boys at every single opportunity. Finally, Mark Briscoe declared that he "can't stand no more" and challenged Bennett and Taven to a tag match.

But in the aftermath of that encounter, the Title of Love made another appearance - as a weapon. Seemingly outnumbered, The Briscoes were forced to listen while Maria gloated about The Kingdom's superiority - and taunted them because, as she pointed out, they would never lay a hand on a woman.

Well...Maria Kanellis might be off limits to Dem Boys, but she forgot that the Briscoe "family" tree branches out a whole lot further than Sandy Fork! To the complete shock of everyone in the building, ODB hit the ring to run off The Kingdom! That's right - ODB is here in ROH!

Her unconventional style and attitude brought ODB years of professional wrestling success. But now she's come to Ring of Honor with her sights set on The Kingdom! With ODB backing them up, The Briscoes finally have what they need to take down Bennett, Taven, and Maria. And ROH isn't wasting moment giving them a chance to do it!

Philadelphia, are you ready for a huge Six PERSON Tag Team Match? That's right - ODB is officially teaming up with The Briscoes and she has her eyes set on Maria Kanellis! STYLES VS FISH SIGNED FOR ROH'S ATLANTA RETURN

For the first time in four years “Hot-lanta” will see Ring of Honor Wrestling (ROH) action, as the Winter Warriors tour storms the North Atlanta Trade Center on Saturday February 21st, 2015.

In a first time ever match-up. Ring of Honor fans will see “The Phenomenal AJ Styles take on on half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions reDRagon - Bobby Fish. Both men are fresh off participating in the biggest wrestling event in Japanese wrestling history, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 9. Both are bruised and battered from spectacular wins in their respective matches in the land of the rising sun.

AJ Styles stated back in August at All Star Extravaganza 6 that the one thing that has escaped him in his run to be the greatest in history, was the ROH World Championship. A win over his highly decorated opponent could be the best start to this mission in 2015. Styles has competed against pretty much every major name in ROH, but Fish will provide a unique style and definitive mind game element that Styles has never seen.

Fish is currently one half of what is without question the best tag team in the world, reDRagon. He shares current reigns as ROH World & IWGP Jr Heavyweight Tag Team Champions with Kyle O’Reilly. 2014 saw Fish & O’Reilly break through as an elite unit. No unit that wrestles at the level that they do is done so without being elite individual wrestlers. Fish is brash, he is cocky and he is confident that a win over AJ Styles could vault him to the elite level of singles competition. As master gamesman he must be prepared for one of the greatest in-ring stars of our generation in Styles.

While Styles has the edge by being a predominantly singles competitor, conquering Fish will prove to be no easy task. It’s the uncommon offense of Fish versus the all out assault style of “The Phenomenal One” for the first time ever. The ink has just dried on the contracts and we are happy to announce the most decorated tag team in Ring of Honor History, former 8x ROH World Tag Team Champions, Jay & Mark, The Briscoe Brothers will face off with a team that has made a huge impact in a short time, #reborn Matt Sydal & ACH, as matchmaker Nigel McGuinness signed a first-time-ever match up for Ring of Honor’s return to Dayton, Ohio on Saturday January 31, 2015.

The history of The Briscoe Brothers’ reign over the ROH tag team division is legendary. They have faced and defeated nearly every major team in ROH history. The Kings of Wrestling, The Prophecy, Kevin Steen & El Generico and The American Wolves are just a few of the great tag teams that The Briscoe’s have made mortal. While Jay is in his second reign as ROH World Champion, Briscoe still has the desire to prove that he and his brother have no peers in tag team wrestling.

“Reborn” Matt Sydal & ACH are a relatively new team. Paired together for the first time ever for Tag Wars 2014, they made an instant name for themselves by beating former ROH World Tag Team Champions, The Young Bucks, to advance to the Finals. Beating the Bucks is no easy task and by matching them move for move on the mat and in the air, the exciting duo of Sydal and ACH proved immediately that they belong in the discussion of great current ROH tag teams. Though they ultimately fell to the ROH World Tag Team Champions reDRagon in the Finals of Tag Wars, the duo would be approached by Nigel to see if they would be interested in more matches as a team.

To the delight of the ROH fans, Sydal & ACH are stepping right into the fire against "Dem Boys". The combination of aerial styles that both Sydal & ACH bring could be considered revolutionary. There has likely never been a duo that has defied gravity with the ease displayed by these two. The Briscoe’s got a taste of their offense, as they were also part of the Tag Wars 2014 Finals, so they won’t be total strangers. Could that offense prove to be kryptonite against ass-kicking, smash mouth style of The Briscoe’s?

In Dayton, on the “Winter Warriors” Tour, it’s the legacy of the greatest against a team looking to create their own legacy. Can Sydal & ACH score the win and prove they are worthy of an ROH World Tag Team Title opportunity? One of the longest rivalries in professional wrestling will write its next chapter on February 21st when the ROH WINTER WARRIORS TOUR stops in Atlanta! They have been friends and they have been enemies: MATT SYDAL & DELIRIOUS!

Matt Sydal and Delirious debuted on the same Ring of Honor event on April 23, 2004 when they actually wrestled each other! ROH would see these two athletes develop a heated rivalry over time. They traded wins and faced each other in the finals of SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST 2006. Their familiarity with each other, however, goes back to the very roots of their respective professional wrestling careers.

While we may not know much about his younger days on The Edge of Sanity, we do that Delirious spent the beginnings of his wrestling career training and traveling alongside Matt Sydal. They honed their skills and styles side by side and night after night. The early days of a wrestler's career are trying and arduous times where one has to gut it out and persevere purely for the love of the sport.

They may not look or sound very similar but Delirious and Matt Sydal are born out of an identical and relentless passion for professional wrestling. It has elevated both of them into globally accomplished superstars. At first it seemed as though circumstances might prevent them from ever facing each other in a ring again. But no longer. On February 21st, Delirious vs. Sydal explodes one more time right here LIVE in an ROH ring!

But, as the most recent episode of ROH TV evidences, it seems that every single one of his matches degenerates into chaos! We know Jimmy Jacobs is well known for bending the rules himself. Can Tommaso Ciampa keep himself in check or will his next match be his LAST match?

- MOOSE VS. MICHAEL ELGIN

Like Tommaso Ciampa, Michael Elgin has ensured he stays in the World Championship picture even if it means causing complete chaos. With turmoil surrounding the number one contender, we are all tuning into ROH TV to find out what happens! As a former World Champion looking to reclaim his glory, Elgin knows that all eyes are on him as we head toward the 13th Anniversary Pay-Per-View in Las Vegas!

This is exactly why Veda Scott has been incessantly lobbying ROH officials to sign her client MOOSE to face Elgin in Philadelphia. Veda insists that the undefeated Moose is the future of professional wrestling and deserves the highest level of competition. And with Stokely Hathaway providing the mental guidance and motivational acumen, Moose might have signed on with the perfect "team" to take him to the top!

- IN RING FISH TANK with reDRagon

The ROH World Tag Team Champions have returned! After successfully defending the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Championship in front of 36,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome, the reDRagon Wagon has triumphantly come back to American soil. They have requested a live in-ring forum to produce a special episode of The Fish Tank. We don't know who they plan to invite as a guest or what on earth they want to talk about, but we are giving them the spotlight on January 24th in Philadelphia!

THE WINTER WARRIORS TOUR IS HEADING TO DEARBORN

THE ROH WINTER WARRIORS TOUR is stopping in Dearborn! On January 30th, we make our return to the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, Michigan.

Ring of Honor fans saw the rise of The Decade in 2014 with Jimmy Jacobs at the forefront. Seen as the devious mastermind, Jacobs conspired with fellow Decade cohort BJ Whitmer to introduce “young boys” to The Decade and Tadarius Thomas would join the group, seeing this a way to further his career. After dealing with several months of humiliation, Thomas decided he didn’t agree with The Decade’s philosophy and left the group. Tadarius recently announced that he is returning to another passion, Mixed Martial Arts. He recently declared that he wanted his last match in Ring of Honor to be in his hometown of Dearborn, MI. His opponent on this night will be the despicable Jimmy Jacobs. Jacobs would love to ruin Thomas’ final night in ROH, as well as make him suffer for turning his back on The Decade! These two will collide with a lot more than personal pride on the line.

ROH fans will also see The Sicilian Psychopath Tommaso Ciampa take on the intense Tyson Dux. Ciampa currently has his sights Jay Briscoe’s prized ROH World Championship, but Dux brings an element that Ciampa should not overlook. Dux, no stranger to ROH fans is a training partner and mentor to current Ciampa nemesis “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin. What role has Elgin played in preparing Dux for his biggest match to date in ROH? Will Ciampa’s erratic state of mind allow him to focus on the task at hand or can Dux capitalize and score a victory?

Ring of Honor World Champion Jay Briscoe will also be in action. A record-setting 2 years without a defeat in singles competition, the “Sandy Fork Bad Ass” has left an open contract on the desk of ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness. Will the fans in Dearborn witness another defense of the ROH World Championship, or is this the night that fate steps and we see a new champion crowned?

A NEW TITLE FOR JAY LETHAL



Ring of Honor would like to congratulate Jay Lethal on breaking Matt Taven’s record for longest individual reign as ROH World Television Champion. As of January 17, 2015, he has held the ROH World Television Championship a record setting 288 consecutive days.

The confident and boisterous Lethal is now officially the measuring stick for any future World TV Champion. Not only is he a two-time champ with the longest individual reign but also has a record-setting 21 title defenses in that 288 days.

Jay Lethal believes that his World Television Championship signifies him as the number one wrestler in Ring of Honor and now Lethal is without a doubt the standard for which all ROH World Television Champions, past, present and future will be measured.

Love how Lethal's reinvented himself for this run. He and Truth are just what each other needed. He's still super young too and deserves to make a few million.

I just finished this week's episode. A few comments:

- I wasn't impressed by Donovan Dijak in the least. He seemed to be lost out there. Jake Dirden was pretty good, but I don't see how he would fit on the roster.
- Alberto's promo completely won me over. Where was that guy in the WWE?
- Did you guys get the Chikara ad? That was totally unexpected.

Last night Silas Young made an appearance at an independent show in Kimberly, WI. He participated in a battle royal match & won. He did look a little slow & really didn't do a whole lot, but still good to see him back. Not sure when he'll be returning to ROH, but they do have a show in his hometown of Milwaukee in March so it's possible we could see him then.

I watched last week pretty much just because I was bored, I have DirecTV now, and nothing else was on. Enjoyed myself so went ahead and DVRed this week and just watching it now. Alberto really was just weird to see, that's like the most fiery I've ever seen him. Which is good since the actual content of the promo kind of bugged me with him doing the typical TNA, "Those Guys Up North SUUUUCCK!!" promo, but the delivery was very good at least.

Would love to see Silas come out at the end of the RoH PPV and challenge the winner of the 4 way.

- Video package needs an upgrade. You got Rhino on there, you got Rhett Titus (whose presence in ROH right now is so odd to me), you got lines from Caleb Seltzer, pretty dated.

- Commentary is so quiet on this show. The crowd sounds great but I wish commentary were easier to hear.

- I want more out of the Addiction, it looks like we're getting it though, really surprised Kazarian beat Cedric as Cedric was supposed to be the up and comer, but maybe the Addiction are gonna get more focus now.

- Donovan Dijak is cool. Jake Dirden did alright, the match lacked a certain polish as the top prospect stuff tends to, the breaking of the pin to do the spike thing came off kind of awkward. Dirden looks just way too indy, it's a tough thing to pull off that homeless look without looking low rate. Necro pulled it off, Luke Harper pulls it off, Dirden doesn't pull it off here.

- Cool that Chikara gets a commercial, I don't really follow Chikara though, and I don't think the quality of that ad was great. All I got from it is there's high flying and it considers itself an alternative. It would help to use footage from beyond 2003 too.

- Everything about the Lethal/El Patron segment was perfect. I agree that the "we're WRESTLERS, they don't get it over THERE" promos are usually gross but El Patron deserves to cut this promo after his WWE experience. I really love when guys break out of WWE's shackles and are immediately awesome. El Patron and Drew Galloway are great examples of that. It's weird especially considering how much thicker El Patron's Mexican accent came out of that promo, just to understand the extent of what WWE does to stifle their talent.

- The Mike Bennett/Adam Cole theme mash up was cool until it went backk to the Cole song then it started coming off kind of ShowMiz. The match was good though, and I like how Jay can juggle the World title angle and still have this ongoing feud with the Kingdom. Maria also fits my earlier statement about people leaving WWE and showing their worth ten fold, she's really become quite a great valet in ROH.

NXT is great and NJPW are obviously killing it, I hope some of this alternative appreciation rubs off on ROH because their shows have been really good lately.
