There will never be a 16 team playoff. The importance of the regular season dictates this. When that many teams can get in it is no longer elite and loses luster. Four is ok for now. Eight you could still do w/o effecting the importance of the regular season too badly as top ten teams usually are one loss teams That's absurd right now it is the most meaningless regular season in all of sports and it has been for a very long time. Expanding the playoffs so every team has a Chance to win a championship. Under the current system not everyone does and the vast majority of the regular season is a pointless waste. Huh? I don't even know where to begin with your reply dude. When you have to be all but perfect in the regular season and even if you are you still might not be as close to perfect as the guy just ahead of you, that makes what you do in the regular season direly important. In the NFL you can lose six or seven and still compete for a championship. A few years ago a team with nine loses won its division. This is a sham. The NFL regular season has far less meaning.

I understand the concept of a 16 team playoff when it's phrased as "every conference champ gets in + 6 at large" although 6 at large still seems like too much for me. I think you could do 12 and give the top 4 byes as a reward.
I can't grasp the notion of college football being the most meaningless regular season when every loss is a dagger. The last thing they should do is increase the playoffs to just include the top 16 teams, that would just encourage even more schedule padding than already exists.

The problem with "Every Champion gets in" is how do you justify a K State, Utah, USC,LSU etc getting left out for Marshall. Yes they are a champion, but look at the shit that Baylor, Miss State etc get for their OOC. At least Baylor and Miss State have a good Conference for the other 8-9 games. Marshall has Miami (OH), Ohio, Akron and Rhode Island. A school that has an Strength of record of 28, NIU (MAC) has one of 37, Boise(MW) has one of 22, UCF(AAC) 41, Georgia Southern (Sunbelt) 55.

I think every conference champion should get in. I think every conference winner (plus the highest ranked independent) should automatically get in and then you have 5 wild card teams get in to make it a 16 team playoff. In the Big 12, Baylor would be the champion due to their head to head victory over TCU. The way they have the playoff now has basically killed any interest I have in college football. I'll take the BCS over the way they do it now.

Getting way more teams into a playoff will make the regular season LESS meaningful, not more. That's an odd stance to take.
Top 8 is the maximum that makes sense to where you're not just watering things down.

I can't express how much I loathe the idea of every conference champion getting in. On a yearly basis you have 3rd and 4th place teams in some major conferences who would take some of the smaller conference champions behind the woodshed. If you go to 8, I want the best 8.

I just don't think it's fair for the smaller conferences to get punished because their schools don't have the resources that the bigger schools do. What incentive would someone have to play ball at one of these schools when you know you have no shot at even competing for a national title? Why go there when your only chance is the Boca Raton Bowl or something like that? I know Alabama would most likely beat Arkansas State pretty handily but they should at least have a chance. If college basketball did it this way, Butler never would've gotten a chance a few years ago when they almost beat Duke in the title game. You could still get some good games. I think Boise State/Baylor for example would be a fun playoff game but it won't happen because smaller conferences most likely won't ever get a shot. Yeah, the teams like Alabama and Oregon would still most likely win but I want to see every conference have a chance.

Same way you do in the NCAA tourney. Better teams get left out for conference champions there, but that's part of the game. In the better conferences, you have a shot at an at large bid and a better seed that a Sunbelt or MW team won't have. But if you're fourth best in your conference, sorry, you don't deserve to be in. Not under any circumstances. You've proven that you weren't NC material throughout the regular season. Better to keep it at 4 than to expand it to 8 and let mid-range conference teams in undeservedly.

Gentlemen, we are at a conundrum. It is a given that 2 of the 4 playoff teams will be hated due to one reason or another (Alabama: SEC bias for god knows how many years; Florida State: Cover up of Winston's transgressions). And we'll have a third team that many will feel should not be there for one reason or another. We must band together and rally around a team that we can hope will win the National Championship. Because.....Ducks Fly Together. I'm a Big Ten guy so if OSU is in, then it's go Buckeyes for me. If not, probably Oregon.

Yet those lower tier teams still get legit talent because there are players who enjoy just winning conference titles and going to bowl games. And those lower tier schools can get into the playoffs under this system, just schedule extremely strong out of conference and dominate your conference and you have a shot.

TCU was #3, went out and won by FIFTY, and dropped THREE spots.
This is a crock.
