It was because he doesn't have to skills to back up the super push. If someone like Dolph Ziggler got "shoved down our throats", it would be accepted. So was his flaws were hid behind the Shield? (pun not intended) Reigns was praised in the trio, and liked his Survivor Series 2013 and Rumble 2014 performances. Not trying to sound like a cynical douche, just playing Devil's Advocate because I find the iwc turn on Reigns kinda perplexing. People hate me for saying this but I cant help but think this is IWC hating whoever the WWE machine chooses as the focus that's not an indy darling. Again Devil's Advocate. Yes his flaws were hidden in the Shield. Ambrose did most of the talking and he and Rollins did most of the heavy lifting in the ring to hide Reigns' limitations. However, doing so kept him from gaining the proper seasoning to improve so that he would be ready for such a push. WWE booked his Survivor Series 2013 and Royal Rumble 2014 performances to happen the way they did. They wanted him to score nearly all of the eliminations in the tag match and to break Kane's Rumble Elimination record so that we would all see how cool and badass he is. And of course there was that awkward phase where the commentators kept referring to the group as "Roman Reigns & The Shield" and calling Reigns "the leader" of the group. And it's not about being an "indy darling". It's about WWE putting the machine behind someone who isn't ready over others who are. WWE can do worse than having Roman topple Lesnar. Roman was a complete beast as part of the Shield and held his own in some fantastic matches. He's pretty much anything you could ask for in a heavyweight: tall, handsome, athletic, and looking fully capable of ripping your head off. Could he use some seasoning? Sure. But it would be a HUGE waste to not push him to the top after all of this. I mean, come on, would you rather have Cena on top AGAIN for the next year? At the same time, look at it like this; If Roman fails as "the guy", whether that's sub par skill, not catching on with the audience or just downright not being cut out for it, what do you think Vince is going to do? Create someone else? Come on! He'll be even more dependent on Cena and Orton because they at least aren't a risk. And Vince isn't going to take two risks in a row. This. WWE aren't overpushing Cena because they want us to accept him. They stopped doing that a long time ago. Cena is booked the way he is because he's their "In Case of Failed Push" button.

I could be wrong in this but I do remember people saying "roman reigns is ready brotha!" And "reigns is gonna be a huge star" in threads on a frequent basis. He was super over here when the seeds were planted for the invevitable mega push. People seemed into him until the Sheild broke up.

I don't really care that much since I'm not big of a Reigns guy, and the other two Shield members look to have bright futures, so its not like their getting the back burner when Reigns gets pushed. I just hate being the guy that has to point out hypocrisy in the iwc. makes us look whiny.

The other two Shield members have gotten some shine, but a small part of me feels that they wouldn't have if Reigns didn't get injured. When The Shield broke up it looked as if the plan was for Rollins and Ambrose to be a midcard feud while Reigns dealt with "the bigger threat" of HHH.

Fair point, but I think they did well for themselves in Reign's absence to cement their place near the top in the future. Especially Rollins. Time will tell, and common sense says that I shouldn't be this optimistic, but besides the part time Lesnar, Rollins is the top heel, and besides maybe Ziggler, Ambrose is the most over face on the roster not named Cena.

Reigns is the only one I'm not sold on. There's always time for Reigns to improve but I still think that Ambrose should get the superstar push. I feel that he has the charisma and mic delivery necessary to overcome any physical flaws he may possess.

I don't think he sucks. He is not anywhere close to main event talent either. There is a pretty big divide between the two. His mic work in the Shield as a heavy who used a few words to back up Ambrose & Rollins was very effective for him. His offense is more or less good if he is taking a hot tag. He's going to have to sell like mad to face Lesnar & be able to receive stiff shots. I have never seen him do any of this, & I'm not optimistic at this point.

Would anyone get behind Reigns if he started wearing $500 shirts, like the Rock?

Come on, who wouldn't get behind "Hard hitting, soft spoken" Roman Reigns?

I like Roman a lot. I like all 3 members of the Shield a lot. I just keep getting this uneasy feeling that WWE is going to completely f*** up his push. I really don't want another "face of the company that everyone hates".

Reigns is not good enough in the ring to have the big-time classic match that main eventing Mania for the WWE title entails these days. This generation is filled with incredible in-ring performers, not just indy-riffic spot-monkeys (did I do that right?) but guys with tremendous selling ability and the charisma to garner strong fan support. Reigns is gonna fall flat, he's not the right guy for the times.

I've been a fan long enough to have seen far worse wrestlers get far more obnoxious pushes, so I tend to be optimistic about Reigns. He has his limitations, but I don't think they're insurmountable.
Give him a shot. If he fails, he fails. They'll kick him down the card for a bit, someone else will be pushed in his place and his detractors will get a cookie. Not the end of the world.

Reigns is gonna fall flat, he's not the right guy for the times. Is that really fair to say though? How long has Roman even been wrestling, 3-4 years? The way people are talking, they make it seem like he's never gonna get any better. He's still pretty young, especially to be elevated to the main event level. He obviously has a great capacity to learn and adapt considering that he never looked out of place in a group with great workers like Rollins and Ambrose. He is going to have some of the most brilliant minds the business has ever seen giving him advice and doing whatever they can to make him look like a star. It is actually impossible that he won't be significantly better this time next year. On top of that, match quality really doesn't matter. Yes, I understand that the roster is filled with incredible workers from top to bottom but at the end of the day, the casual fan could not give a shit less about how many moves a guy can do. If they did, Cesaro would be the most over guy on the roster. Fans want something to believe in. That's it. Daniel Bryan didn't blow up because he had great matches, he blew up because people believed in him and wanted to rally behind him. Whether or not people want to admit it, the fans like Roman. They cheer for the guy, they obviously believe in him for the time being. Not every guy needs to be the one have a **** 1/4 match nor should every guy even try to. That's why Ryback comes off like any other goober on the roster now, they took away what made him different and are trying to force him to work the style most of the other guys are working. There's no reason why Roman can't get over as a goon that kills his opponent in fairly short matches. It's gonna take some careful booking, sure, but it absolutely can be done.
