The problem is that he's a good pure wrestling announcer miscast as a 'storyteller' in the vein of a Jim Ross or Tony Schiavone. Exactly. In WCW he was cast as the guy that did his research and knew the lucha and puro guys, and the name of the holds. That's what he's good at, a fight professor.

Terrible as a lead play-by-play man, not half bad as the fact-spouting third man he was in WCW. He is also the leader of an alien invasion:

In terms of favorite Tenay memories my last great memory of Tenay was when he was in his short woman hating phase in WCW where he'd have sit down interviews with girls and slutshame them.

I like him as part of a commentary team, but not as the lead play by play man.

I don't think he was really bad until like 2010.
I'm not excusing his last 5 years of suck, but I don't think his whole tenure was that bad.

I wonder how many takes it took for Tenay to do that part at the funeral with a straight face.

When they finally do go under, I'd honestly really like to hear a Mike Tenay shoot interview about his time there. He looks like a man who's holding a lot back.

I have to believe at this point he either has always been happy just to work or he's convinced himself nothing is wrong just to survive. He's been there for WCW at its worst and all of TNA, he has to be the most worn out man in the history of the wrestling business.

I dunno if you can find a smile in wrestling with more venom behind it than his I'd love to see it because it's probably hilarious.

When World's Collide in 1994
WCW circa 1996 and 1997.
Coming from a newsletter and radio show background, he was a knowledgeable voice who could speak about wrestlers who competed in Japan and Mexico and he was much more familiar with the junior heavyweight and lucha style of wrestling. He was a very welcome voice for WCW cruiserweight matches when Dusty, Bobby, and Tony just didn't know the wrestlers or the style as well. Tony to his credit did try to educate himself on these wrestlers and moves, but it came more naturally from Tenay.

I love Magnus' approval of Tenay keeping the shorts. I've just got to say Dusty may not have known the style, but it was awesome to hear him on commentary during those matches, because it was clear he was having a blast watching them.
