I am just curious of how many other posters/WWE fans are slaves to the hospitality or service industry? Literally, this has been my life. I have been a hotel desk slave for 5 years. I have picked up shifts at a restaruant to make more money, and I have also been a coffee slinger at Starbucks as a side gig. I have seen it, heard it, and done it all. My husband also works the front desk of a hotel too. We always swap stories, and it's nice to have a husband who understands the struggle. So... How many people of FAN are hospitality minions? What do you do? (don't display company name, or anything specific of the area that you are in-- big brother does watch us) and what is your plan to escape, if you are planning on escaping at all?

I don't personally, but my best friend is a "lifer".
She's managing a hotel in Louisiana now after years of front desk and overnight audit shifts. It was a huge struggle for her because she's been in the hotel busniess for years, but it took her going back to school (thankfully on work's dime, mostly) to get certifications so that someone would take her seriously.
When she first worked audit I was working overnight at an answering service. We'd fax stuff to each other since the computers at my job were "Dedicated" (no internets) and both of us usually had a few hours to kill.

I have to pick up an overnight here and there, but there is no way I could go back to doing it full time. Kudos to her for getting her certifications though! I think I want to go to school, but honestly I don't know what for. I don't want a hospitality degree, because I know I will get angry in a class with a bunch of people who would like to run a hotel, but have never worked in one before. Plus expirience trumps a degree anyday in this industry. (atleast in my area) That's clever about making use of the fax machine, lol.

I could not deal with the hours of night audit either. It's a shame, because I could probably get good at it, but I cannot keep up such a schedule full time.
I am relishing the fact that I have a full-time early swing schedule right now after two years of late shifts, so I can keep some relatively normal hours for the next few months.

That's the thing with audit shifts... it's the lesser of the three evils. I would always finish my work early, and have plenty of downtime. But it's the hours that are just exhausting, and they literally have an effect on your life. I would rather do 3-11 any day. At least that shift goes by fast.

I work at a restaraunt and have a tip to get free food. Once in awhile have your buddy call in order something for pick up. It'll take abit but in most restauraunts after awhile the food'll be up for grabs since nobody came to get it.

I've basically worked various restaurant jobs since I began working(with a hiatus here or there to explore other things, but always returned to it.) I started off cooking but moved positions when I was able and I've basically worked every position available in a restaurant - I'm running a kitchen right now but I'm not really happy with the place so I'm thinking about looking for something new.

It takes a lot of patience, and not taking anything that guests say to heart. I deeply appreciate my sweet guests, and ones who treat me like a human. They are the reason I keep on keeping on!

Going on 15 years in both industries with just passing my 10 year mark at my current job. I currently bartend and manage front of house but have the occasional wait shift tossed in.

I spent 2007-2013 working my way up the ladder at sports bar operated by a company so poor at marking business decisions they've been in administration four times since 2007 and seen the number of locations still in business shrink from 204 to just 49. Despite reaching assistant manager level with the likelihood of a management position in the future, I saw the writing on the wall and bailed last summer, with the intention of getting a job that would allow me to focus on updating my skills so I could return to web design at some point - and just as well I did, as the bar I worked at was closed down in November.
So now I work as a hotel night receptionist. I initially started at a larger, busier hotel in the city centre and was quickly promoted to team leader, but took a transfer to a smaller hotel within the same company on the outskirts of the city as I felt the increasing duties were interfering with my studies. Now I sit behind a desk all shift with my laptop, rarely see a single guest (while usually full, we have mostly business people who are in bed by the time I clock on), and have roughly an hour of actual work to stretch out over an 8-hour shift. I like to think I get paid to study towards my next career move.

Yikes! 6 months ago I transferred from a 460 room full service property to a little over 100 room limited service property. Let me tell you, it has made a huge difference. I actually enjoy what I do now. So I understand taking that downsize.

I worked night audit at a hotel directly across the street from Busch Gardens. It was hell. Then, transferring from that job to night audit at another hotel...directly across from the Florida state fairgrounds.
