So after like three or four years of hearing people rave about this, I decided to give it a shot. It seemed right up my alley. A show with swords, dragons, and naked chicks everywhere. I had heard that it was intriguing and had depth to it.
I must have missed something, because I watched a few episodes and did not like it at all. People stood around talking, having conversations that seemed to go nowhere. A midget kept hitting his brother for no reason during a conversation. A guy looked at his sister naked and then told her he'd let 40,000 men have sex with her to get their home back. Everyone on this show acted like a total asshole except for a little boy who was then killed. Another little boy cut the cheek of yet another little boy while a little girl screamed for him to stop. No one on this show is likeable, no one is the hero, and nothing really happens. There weren't even any funny one liners from anyone for comic relief from all the dickery. What is the big deal about this show?
I'm not trying to start a hate thread, if people like it that's cool and I hope they enjoy themselves while watching it. I guess I just need to vent a little because I'm so disappointed. I went into this thinking I was going to see an amazing show like Spartacus or something along those lines, or maybe a Lord Of The Rings with more sex. It was just dull in every way imaginable. It even has a boring look to it. It's very cold and lifeless feeling.
For those of you who enjoy it, can you maybe explain why you like it or why it appeals to you? I'm wondering if I missed something or just didn't "get it" or whatever.

There's only 9 more episodes in the first season, man. It gets better. Trust me, I literally just watched all of it myself for the first time, and I'm hooked now. Starting the next season with my girlfriend this weekend.

It takes about half the first season before the show really starts going anywhere. I found it very slow to start, but man it's so worth it.

Game of Thrones is the best show on television simply because it allowed the world to have this:

it's a slow moving show at first, and there's not much in the way of action until the end of the first season. it's a bit of a misnomer to just call the show Lord of the Rings with boobs. if you go in expecting that you'll be disappointed.

I love it, but don't force yourself to watch it if you're just not into it.

Yes there ARE heroes in the show. That midget? He's one of them. The others are the Starks (yes, they might do some things that are questionable but they're the most honorable of the main families), and Daenerys Targaryen. They're not traditional heroes, but they're all pretty much the good guys nonetheless.
Also, there's plenty more episodes. Just watch the rest of the season, then decide if you can stick with it. Every conversation has a point to it. There's layers of foreshadowing in this.

I tried once and was bored shitless.
The best explanation I've got for the series so far is that there's tits.
Not 14 anymore, don't care.

So since starting the thread I've spent the last hour or so reading about the show online. From what I can tell, there aren't really any good guys. It's just that everyone is a bad guy and you hate some more than others if you get invested.
Is this fairly accurate?

But I do actually like some of them, cause they are charming assholes, like Tyrion(the midget) and Littlefinger.

There are no boy scout faces... well, there are, but they get mocked a bit, but still end up pretty cool. But there are definitely good guys. Sure, they make tough choices, and sometimes the wrong ones. But at their core, they're still good. The show is very obvious about the ones you should outright hate, but there are a few heels you actually find yourself rooting for, and for the most part everyone has understandable motivations.

LOL. That was pretty much my experience with it as well. I can see why it's so beloved, but there is A LOT of dialogue. It's not a show for casuals. You have to decide that you'd like to be a part of that World and really dig in. If not, then it's just a bunch of people you likely don't know speaking at length about things you likely don't understand.

Yeah. I watched the first two eps and never really felt the need to watch more.
Not a bad show, I didn't hate it and can easily see why people love it the way they do, its just not in my wheel house or whatever.

To the OP...skip the 1st season and jump right into S.2 episode two. You won't be lost at all.

Okay, please don't read any of what I type in hostile tones. I'm going to do my best not to come off as obnoxious or asshole-ish in this post.
1. Game of Thrones really isn't a show for the casual viewer. Don't expect to jump into any random episode and immediately know what's going on. This is NOT a knock against you, but the show does require a lot of attention to be paid. You said "some midget was hitting his brother for no reason." You missed a lot of info leading up to that scene. I know names are hard to get down after only one viewing, so there's nothing wrong with not knowing the midget's name, but that was his nephew he was slapping the shit out of, not his brother, and he was doing that because the pampered little snot was being very disrespectful to the Stark family (the people who owned the land/castle they were visiting, and whose child had been seriously hurt). The midget's brother is the guy who pushed the kid out of the window and hurt him in the first place. No one except the midget's brother and the midget's sister knows that it was the brother who pushed the kid out the window. There's tons of other informative stuff like this that's character development. You have to really pay attention to know what the hell is going on. It can be boring, but please believe me, it will come together, make sense, and make the show more enjoyable later on.
2. I was exactly where you were when watching season 1. The show back then was so damn plodding and slow. Some characters, at the time, I didn't give to shits about, but they seemed to be taking all the screen time. Please stick with it and plow on through! When the midget gets arrested, the show really starts to pick up in season one and most of the story elements begin to get more interesting. Beware scenes with Jon Snow and "The Wall." Some of that stuff is good, but throughout season one, IMO, it was by far the most boring stuff (along with anything having to do with Bran...the kid who got hurt). Both of these storylines DO pick up in the later seasons, and there are high spots here and there in season one.
3. If you're expecting some Superman like virtuous pure good loving mega baby face to pop up and thwart the forces of evil in Game of Thrones, you're going to be disappointed. A lot of the characters who come close to being that good actually get betrayed and murdered. Sadly, this is no super hero comic, and there's no coming back from the dead. If you stick with it, you might call me out on that last statement as it isn't entirely true...but, for the most part, yeah, it's pretty right on. A lot of the characters on the show are either extremely evil (you'll know them, believe me) or actually good with hints of grey. The midget, for example, likes to whore and drink a lot, but he's also possibly the most compassionate and caring character in the show (especially in seasons two and three). He can be a total smart ass, but he has reasons, whether justified or not. Most of the Stark family are very good people, but they can jump to conclusions too quickly and they make mistakes...putting trust into the wrong people. The show isn't really like Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings where you can point at any character and definitely say "He's lawful good!" or "He's chaotic neutral!" Some characters you can EASILY guess their alignment, but other characters are much harder to place.
Anyway, if the show isn't for you, then damn it, it just isn't for you and that's the way it'll be! I will beg you to stick with it until maybe an episode or 2 after the midget is arrested, as I said before, but if you are adamant about no longer watching, I can't blame you. Season one of Game of Thrones is a tough sit through. No doubt about it. However, you do have to sit through it to get an idea of who everyone is to enjoy the later seasons. If you find yourself interested in what happens next after season one, you might just be hooked. Good luck and best wishes!!
