Its also strange when I hear people talk about how its a crossover show for people trying to get into the fantasy genre. The show is NOT easy to get into, unless you've read the books first, I've gathered.
I didn't think the fantsy genre was for me, but now some of my favorite comic books and animes are Fantasy, but GoT just did nothing for me. It put me off more to the genre in the end.

Never got into it either, it's not my sort of thing so I shouldn't be surprised by that. People tell me I am missing out all the time, but I don't feel that way

I loved the first season and started reading the books afterwards. It is a little complicated telling some of the characters apart. I watch each week with my mom over the net and she still has no idea who Roose Bolton is, but likes that red haired woman he hangs out with... she may be slightly blind.

Okay so I watched up to episode 7 so far of season 1, and never have I been happier to be wrong about a show! I'm hooked, and Im literally a little angry Im not watching the next episode right now. I found characters to like too, the Stark family in general is pretty great, and Im really digging the blonde chick with the warrior clan and all their stuff going on. And man, she's really hot, I think I have a new crush! I do wish it was easier to learn everyone's names though, people don't call each other by name as much as they do in most shows, but at least at this point I can tell everyone apart, and everyone's motives are becoming clear. There's also actually a little comic relief here and there, for example the king not fitting into his armor and stuff. I love it!

I was in the exact same situation, dude. I'm glad you gave it another chance.

I think that's around the time Tyrion (the dwarf) gets arrested/put on trial! I was hoping it'd get you by that point!! YAY!!!!

i usually hate dragony swordy stuff but am totally hooked on game of thrones.
so many total bastards in it that you want to see ended in a horrific way. what i like about it is that it does face and heel turns quite well and sometimes you find yourself rooting for someone that was a total bastard at the start -

It's a crossover because it's a lot simpler than LoTR or TES or any of the other big heavy hitters. It's grounded much closer to the realm of historical fiction, which automatically makes it more accessible for most people, since it's not as carved into the Fantasy niche as its contemporaries are. Also, it doesn't require anywhere near the the time and patience to really get into it; you can read the books if you want to, but if you prefer abridged reading, the wiki and the show are a more than adequate coupling. Seven or eight hours of GoT might seem like a lot of time, but I had to put in around 30 hours of Skyrim before I was locked in as an Elder Scrolls fan, for example. And I'd argue that given the format and presentation, TES is still easier to get into than LoTR and the rest of the Middle Earth media are.

Oh, I can see how it would be for other people, I just meant for me. It really put me off more to a genre I was starting to wade into. I tried the first few eps of the show and just didn't care to invest another 4-5 hours into it. I read fantasy comics like Rat Queens and Pathfinder (which are WAY more steeped in the fantasy genre) and they did a better job of drawing me in. But yeah, I can see how GoT would hook people in general.
