People being driven into debt just for being sick. It angers me. Unfortuantely, the model of American health care has focused more on a commerce based approach than a humanity based approach. Granted, medical expenses can be costly, but I always feel like the middle man gets involved to pocked some extra cash. I know this due to the fact that my mom had a hip operation last year. That said, I shall support you. Let us know updates on what happens, alright? Unfortunately, from my understanding curative cancer care is not covered even by socialized health care in a lot of places But let's not go down this route as it will lead to us having to lock this thread. Hope everything works out in your favor Professor Chaos.

My mum has cancer which can't be cured unfortunately but she looks great and feels great, it's just going to get her one day.
Threads like this remind me of how much the US Health system f***ing sucks.

Threads like this remind me of how much the US Health system f***ing sucks. There was a fascinating interview on NPR with a doctor that suggested it might be better to leave some cancers alone. If they're not spreading, not causing health issues, it might be better for the patient to just monitor it. The doc argued that the severity and invasiveness of current cancer treatments might not be prudent in situations where the cancer isn't metastasizing.

If it spreads, it can put you in greater danger. Cancer does spread. Some slower than others, but it will spread. Early detection it the key to survival for most cases.

If it spreads, it can put you in greater danger. Cancer does spread. Some slower than others, but it will spread. Early detection it the key to survival for most cases. What happened with my mum is that she had really aggressive chemo which shrunk the tumor on her lungs and closed off the lymph nodes from spreading any further, but she got a very small cluster spread to the bottom of her spine. They gave her this new pill which has only been available for 4 years so far and she is part of the 5% of people that have the right mutation to be able to take it, and what the pill does it basically seal her cells so they dont grow or spread any further. They dont have much data for longevity as it has only been available for 4 years apart from the fact that something like 85% of the people that started trailing the drug 4 years ago are still alive and taking it, so with her it literally is a case of monitoring and 3 month scans from here on out. And, yes, it's all FREE because our health system isn't an abomination.

The doc argued that the severity and invasiveness of current cancer treatments might not be prudent in situations where the cancer isn't metastasizing. It is all subjective. Breast cancer is now pretty treatable if it is caught early enough. Once it metastasizes to bone, however, things start looking a lot more grim. Dealing with prostate cancer is even worse due to completely insane reasons. There are times where the treatment can be harder on you than the disease itself, which would be undesirable unless it could prevent future problems. Mainly, if any cancer gets into the bone things suck. Even if you are on a chemo recipe that the cancer is sensitive to, being in the bone just means there will be a protected reserve of tumor cells that can get out of the bone after your chemo is done and cause a relapse. Once you have a relapse you will need to get a new chemo recipe as the old one will make you feel like shit without doing a damned thing to your new tumors. The need for a way to deal with that set of problems is why I do what I do.

Yeah, I can confirm that prostate cancer treatment is pretty rough (From what I've seen). My dad and two of his brothers all were diagnosed with it within a year of each other. All of them had to have their prostates removed. My two uncles had their surgery quite a while ago and they're still not 100%. My dad has had an awful time as well. But the good news is that all three are cancer free now. But, yeah, f*** cancer. To the OP: Stay strong and kick its ass.

My aunt is currently battling breast cancer, after 25 years in remission. It's really rough, so I hope the best for you and your family.

I'm new so you probably don't know me that well but I'd like to wish you all the best. Fight this thing as best you can and live the rest of your life. Things might seem helpless but do your best to fight this thing.
Also, it's a damn shame that the American health system can't help you. In my country if you have cancer everything is free and that is how it should be.
