My mum has cancer which can't be cured unfortunately but she looks great and feels great, it's just going to get her one day. Threads like this remind me of how much the US Health system f***ing sucks. There was a fascinating interview on NPR with a doctor that suggested it might be better to leave some cancers alone. If they're not spreading, not causing health issues, it might be better for the patient to just monitor it. The doc argued that the severity and invasiveness of current cancer treatments might not be prudent in situations where the cancer isn't metastasizing. Do you happen to know the name of the doctor? I would love to read more on this.

What type of cancer is it?
What type of health insurance do you have?
Most medical insurance has an annual out of pocket maximum for what you would have to pay per year. Even if you're on a high deductible plan, your oop max should be less than $10,000.
This is something that you should fight using your insurance. I work in the medical insurance industry so if you have any questions regarding your benefits just ask.
Most medical bills are inflated to an extreme amount, but insurance companies only pay a fraction of the billed amount on claims. It's called the allowed amount or contacted rate. I've seen hospital bills as high as $90,000 that were paid in full by a 4,000 check from insurance.

It actually makes a ton of sense. Most cancer patients I speak to say they didn't know they were sick until the diagnosis and only when they started treatment they started feeling ill.

Damn, man. That's horrible. I hope you try some of the cancer resources that people have suggested, and we're all rooting for you. ot a fan of that at all. If it spreads, it can put you in greater danger. Cancer does spread. Some slower than others, but it will spread. Early detection it the key to survival for most cases. I'm wagering he's mostly referring to prostate cancer and that it depends on the patient. It's often found in elderly men, but usually grows so slowly that the patient would likely die from other age-related conditions before the cancer. Meanwhile, the treatment for those patients could lead to worse quality of life than the cancer would. Obviously, things would be different for a younger patient, or a type of cancer that isn't so slow. That's nor really that unheard of, and the treatment can be worse than the cancer. However, a younger patient would obviously pursue treatment.

Been feeling like hell for a while now so finally went to a doctor to see what the hell was wrong with me. Turns out I got advanced cancer. My health insurance sucks and I don't wanna drive my family into insurmountable debt just to keep me artificially alive for a few years. You know me FAN I'll fight anybody that looks at me funny so gonna fight this on my own as long as I can. /salute. Very sorry to come in so late here, but really wanted to give you my best and wish you well in the fight.
