I just honestly couldn't believe they thought having it play out the way it did was anything even remotely resembling a good idea.
Have the most popular babyface of this decade come back and declare that not only is he returning, he's going to win the Royal Rumble, go to WrestleMania, and conquer The Beast to win back the title he never lost. The fans went nuts, were firmly behind him, everything seemed well.
And like everything keeps saying, and has said for the past 12 months, it's not the fact that he didn't win the match. It's the fact he got dumped out mid-match with little to no fanfare, and they expected the audience to be totally okay with that because HERE COMES ROMAN. The fact that they were SHOCKED how the crowd turned on the match so fast shows how f***ing stupid they were in booking it in the first place. You don't want Bryan winning the Rumble because you're still worried about his physical health? Fine. Then DON'T BRING HIM BACK UNTIL AFTER! You can't have him make that big triumphant return from career-ending injury, say he's going to win the big one and ra-ra-ra, and then do THAT. It was stupid and irresponsible booking. And that at point in time, Roman was still very much unproven as a big-name babyface. Sure, you pushed him to the moon and tried to pretend he was the next big name, but the fans still weren't buying it at that point, and clearly he needed some more time. So to try and book an unproven talent like him to win that match KNOWING the fans are going to be furious about Bryan, what did you honestly expect?
What would've happened if Austin or Triple H were eliminated, in 01 and 02 respectively, in similar fashion? They had both returned from big career ending injuries prior to those matches, much in the same way Bryan did last year. What if they just had Austin thrown out mid-match by, I don't know, Albert? Then have all the remaining fan favorites dumped out by Kane and Big Show (jeez, THAT's scary), Rikishi win the whole thing and go on to WrestleMania? It's the same idea (sans Kish being a heel at the time, but they could've turned him if they wanted), except they knew how to book the the most basic of stories back then and wouldn't have done something that monumentally stupid. And if Austin, for example, wasn't ready to go for the match, they wouldn't have put him in it in the first place, which is exactly how they should've handled Bryan. I can only hope that after the fiasco that was last year (which was even worse than the year prior), they've learned their lesson, but I'm still not so sure, so all I can say is that I'm optimistically cautious going into tonight.
