*Shrugs* ever since more than one person would sing in a song and one sang more than the other.

I've heard it before, but I figure it's mainly since "singer" wouldn't be accurate if it was a rapper, and this could mean either.

Probably ever since the words "lead" and "vocalist" came into existence. Tons of 50s/60s girl groups and boy bands had back-up vocalists and a lead vocalist. Goes back before that too, I imagine. Same thing as "lead singer" and that's been around forever.

It's been a term as long as I've been paying attention to music, at least.

I love multiple vocals when they're arranged neatly, providing they're all chained to someone with talent. Not so much when they just throw someone in there, Like, if your bassist can't sing, then go ahead and let them focus on bass. I don't think having them tag choruses really adds anything.
A good harmony owns though.

Since the beginning of music with vocals. "Singing lead" is about as common a musical expression as "tune up" or "daddy-o".

I assume when someone figured out the guy singing the song was leading the song as the others sang melody or hummed or sang ooooos. You know, because he was the lead vocalist.
