It was really exciting to watch, but at the same time I don't want to see one like that again any time soon. Really good to see the Honda teams able to compete though - and to see Marco and Graham leading the charge for the Hondas not just in the race but overall this season as well.

Fun race, but it seems like this could very well be a tipping point for Indycar. Even though there's arguably been considerably much more media attention this year, it hasn't really been necessarily for positive things, and the Indycar management still dumbfounds me with their decision-making process.
I don't tend to agree with Robin Miller, but his article basically calling out Indycar, I actually agree with. The attendance at Fontana was embarrassing to watch, but I honestly don't blame the California fans. The fact that they keep shuffling the date around for the past few years and decided that sticking it in the middle of a California summer for a Saturday afternoon race was the best option... that almost comes off like they're -trying- to lose the date.
There's honestly no winners here and no magic solution, other than the fact that the current management really isn't bringing ANYTHING to the table, and being obsessed with consultancy groups with no motorsports experience doesn't help either.

38 laps in and damn, I wish Sprint Cup had more road courses.

When I was younger I absolutely loathed the Nascar road races, now for the past few years its one of the few Nascar races I watch flag to flag.

Seriously. I don't know when the changeover was, probably when the majority of the Earnhardt Sr./Labonte/Marlin generation was retired, but that's seemingly when they started taking the road courses seriously and racing as aggressively if not more aggressively than on the ovals. Before that it's more like the road courses were grudgingly tolerated more than anything.
You'd never see a driver step aside for the road course races to let a ringer drive just because they were too lazy to learn how to road race nowadays.

I was solely a NASCAR fan after CART fell apart in 2003 but I fell out of it about 6 years ago. While I mainly enjoy Indycar, F1, and Sports Car racing now-a-days, I still tune into to the Sonoma and Watkins Glen races. It's awesome racing(usually) and it's fascinating seeing these almost 2 ton beasts gets lugged around a road course.

Well, if your a night owl then get ready for racing (as NBC plays their theme, "Bringing Back the Sunshine"), if your sane, enjoy the sleep.

Earnhardt Jr is your winner tonight, with a massive crash for Dillon into the catch fence (among others) on the run to the finish.

Junior wins but the Big One strikes. I swear I thought I had just seen Austin Dillion perish. I saw a his car flip and hit the catch fence at 190+ mph and completely apart, his drivetrain sitting in the grass while what you can only call the remains slide down the track and get hit by another car while on its top. I saw 3 crews run to try and save him but...
But he walked away. Not only walked away but was able to wave to and show people he was fine. For all we bitch about the changes NASCAR has made, for that to happen, they did something right.

I am going to say that was the worst crash I have seen since Bodine's 2000 crash. Glad to see Austin walked away and thankfully they said the injuries to fans were minor.

That wreck scared the shit out of me. Glad to see Austin Dillon walk out on his own power.

If anything, I'd say that the fence definitely held better than it did the last time it was tested at Daytona with Kyle Larson's engine going into the stands. From what I've heard only 3 or so fans had minor injuries, which is a definite improvement.
From looking at the replay, there was nothing aero-related about the crash at all. He just got kind of knocked up in the air and the cars around him basically pushed him into a flip. I'm not sure even a Bodine Bar would have helped (and I thought those were just for the trucks anyway).
Edit: Okay, 5 fans. But still.
