Planning to see it today but really no idea what I'm going to think of it. The trailers look solid, but they also look pretty much like cookie cutter Marvel which is something I'm getting pretty tired of, and I'm pretty tired of high school Spider-Man by now.
I'm guessing I'm going to like it but not have much of it stick with me, but I could see myself being anywhere from loving it to hating it based off the various factors going in.

The trailers look solid, but they also look pretty much like cookie cutter Marvel Friend of mine just watched it and said pretty much the same thing about it. Not terrible or great, just kinda boring because it's nothing new or interesting. Just more of the same from this studio. They're really good at making that same movie over and over again, but based on everything I'm hearing about Homecoming so far, I'm probably gonna pass on it altogether. There are too many films already in July that I want to watch in theaters to waste on another assembly-line MCU film.

I just saw it, and it wasn't bad. I think Michael Keaton did an awesome job as Vulture. On the flip side, Ned was annoying. I was unfamiliar with Donald Glover's character, since I mostly read pre-1995 Marvel. As far as cameos and Easter Eggs: {Spoiler}
Took me a minute to realize we were seeing Scorpion.
I laughed when we saw Ultron's head.
Who were they talking about when they referenced a principal with a crossbow?
Marisa Tomei looked a little older here. Did they make her that way, or has she aged overnight?
So what do we make of the mid-credit scene? Vulture is alive and kicking, but in jail. Think he'll run into Kingpin?
Not a fan of the MJ reveal.
My previews were lame. We only had Planet of the Apes, Wish Upon and Brigsby Bear.

Coming out of it now. On my iPad so can't go into full thoughts at the moment but on the whole... I was really eager for that movie to be done with. I figured it'd be a breezy sit, not great but not terrible, and that's kind of what it was but it just dragged on and on and on and on for me. Felt like it was never going to end. Edit: Okay, back home, to elaborate... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}First off, stuff I liked about it - the comedy was pretty on point. There's a lot to laugh at and it's structured well around it, though that said by the end of the movie I was kind of done with it and just ready for it to be over with, since while everyone else was cracking up during the bathroom scene I was really just stone-faced waiting for the thing to be over with already. Though that said I did still laugh pretty hard at the Aunt May part and the Captain America scene.
Another thing I really like is the world-building. The movie does put a lot of time and attention into what it'd be like a decade into this world, and into how superheroes are kind of just becoming mundane at this point in time, and I think it works pretty well. The hero worship of Stark got really grating, which I'll get into in a minute, but stuff like the Captain America videos and the F***, Marry, Kill part worked pretty well for making the movie really feel alive and like it takes place in this shared world.
Going a little more mixed... Characterization is a bit of a mixed bag. Peter's likable, if often kind of an idiot and WAY too much of a spineless kiss-ass with Stark. Most of the supporting cast is fine, though the main girl was a lot less interesting than not-MJ, Flash was an annoying waste of time, Aunt May was great but feel like she should've had more screentime, and Stark... Tony I just found an insufferable asshat the entire time. Particularly in regards to the boat scene, where in that particular case there's really no reason at all to believe anything would've happened differently if Peter hadn't been there and no acknowledgement is made of the fact even though Peter couldn't hold the boat together he did manage to hold it long enough for Stark to fix it and people would have died had he not done that. Then there's Vulture, who I liked quite a bit but it feels like it takes too long into the movie for him to get any real depth, and they sort of vaguely face-turn him a little too easy.
Also on the whole the movie just felt completely plotless to me. It really can be boiled down to...
- Vulture does a thing. - Peter gets his ass kicked stopping the thing. - Vulture's running low on resources, says he won't do the big job. - Pointless high school shit. - Vulture does a thing. - Peter gets his ass kicked stopping the thing. - Vulture's running low on resources, says he won't do the big job. - Pointless high school shit. - Vulture does a thing. - Peter gets his ass kicked stopping the thing. - Vulture's running low on resources, says he will do the big job. - No one questions how he could know when exactly the Avengers are moving to their new office. - Climactic fight where Peter loses his mask like he always does. - The end.
... and that just isn't really very satisfying and feels like it's lasting an eternity for it to go over two hours with that flimsy a set-up.
Also the movie's fight scenes were embarrassingly bad. Most of the time they looked like they were edited by someone in the midst of a seizure, often had absolutely no idea what was going on.

My wife and I just checked it out. I have to say, I borderline hated it. I think casual moviegoers will love it, but longtime fans of the Spider-Man comics will have a tough time with a lot of it. Here's some spoilery gripes. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Damn near the entire supporting cast are only the characters in name only. Ned Leeds isn't really Ned Leeds. Liz Allen isn't actually Liz Allen. Betty Brant is just a random girl. Flash Thompson is a goofy looking pipsqueak. And the worst? The new character "Michelle" informs the crew at the end of the film "My friends call me MJ". That's right, "MJ" doesn't even stand for "Mary Jane" anymore. Now I'm expecting J. Jonah Jameson to show up in the sequel as a f***ing dentist or something.
Also, Spidey now has an A.I. voice in his suit just like Iron Man, and we get shots of all kinds of VR interface nonsense. To me, this sucks all the Spider-Man out of him. He's just teenage Iron Man. So yeah, I'm still sticking to my guns and saying Andrew Garfield was the best Spider-Man. I liked the movie more than you did, but I also recently watched Amazing Spider-Man 2 for the first time and thought it was pretty damn good. Yeah, I share the opinion Garfield is the best.

Garfield got kind of a raw deal in that he got one decent movie and then one pretty bleh movie and that's it. He could've been great in a great movie.
That said, Holland so far has nailed both Peter and Spidey in ways that Tobey and Garfield didn't fully. If he is able to keep that up, he'll run away with being the best.
However, we've been pretty lucky in that all three guys have been at least good.

It was a solid 10/10 to me. Best Spider-Man on film. Tom Holland IS Peter Parker.

{Spoiler}So who were they hinting to in the mid credit scene?
I'm guessing Kraven. Could be Kingpin who is already established via the Daredevil Netflix series.
Can't think of who else it could be. Can't imagine they are talking about the science based villains, or one with powers.

So, what is the verdict on our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?
It's FUN! Normally, especially with Marvels lately, you do get caught up in the larger world, constantly thinking 'How does this fit in', 'what's it building too' and 'so, what is next?'. Here, they fit it in very quickly and then just... let it ride. Don't worry about the big picture, enjoy this adventure. Love the characters, enjoy the story, let the rest take care of itself.
It works brilliantly. Yes, nods to the comics, nods to the past and touches to the larger Marvel world, but this is Spider-Man front and center and he rocks it brilliantly. They were right, by the way, we needed a street level, young superhero to fill a niche you didn't even know was missing. Job really well done here by the cast and writers.
Won't spoil any cameos or surprises, we can guess SOME, but a few? Ah, ah, ah, be surprised!
And to the future? I will paraphrase a character from the movie in my words to Sony - These movies, these characters, are like family to me. Don't you dare mess with my family or I'll kill you.
Metaphorically.
Sony, play nice. Work with Marvel, work with integrating or let the adults take over here. Do. Not. Mess. Up. A. Good. Thing.
As for where it fits in my scale... to be determined final placement. I will say up front, I think this is better than Guardians 2 and Strange. It is one of the best of the Marvels and really, so so nice to have Spider-Man home.

{Spoiler}I'm happy for Michael Mando cause after doing great work on Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad it looks he is going get some decent exposure playing a well known villain in the Marvel/Sony Spider-Man film verse. Yes Scorpion will probably be a secondary villain. But it's something.
Let's hope it's not another Crossbones situation.

On a scale ranging from Spider-Man fetish costume butt-slapping to Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (Iceman! And Firestar!), how would you rate the new movie?

Just got back from it. Absolutely loved it. Easily my favorite Marvel movie, let alone Spider-Man movie. Everything about it just did it for me. Spider-Man is my favorite superhero so I knew I'd most likely enjoy it going into it but my expectations were exceeded. If I had to rank the movies, it'd be Homecoming>2>1>3. I thought Andrew Garfield wasn't good and his movies don't even rank for me.
I also really liked not just the hook of Vulture's character but the depth he added to the universe. As much as I love the movies, most of the villains are whack and not memorable, save for Loki. That's literally it, IMO. I can't even name the villains or their motives from most of the other movies. But a dude working on the underground seizing a market made possible by the way the world has changed, the whole Damage Control thing, it all added a nice layer of verisimilitude to the MCU. Not to mention Michael Keaton did a great job with the role.
I also must say, that new MJ is cute as heeeeck.
