With all the whoopla over the new trailer for Batman v Superman and the many criticisms that have been leveled against it (mainly at Zack Snyder and its bleak tone), let's compare the two most divisive films for the World's Finest.
Superman I and II are well praised by many, with III and IV were largely given negative feedback. Superman Returns has its fans but it wasn't exactly the Superman movie that was needed in 2006. Man of Steel caused huge controversy with how the usually optimistic character of Superman was depicted, especially with Superman snapping General Zod's neck at the end and the amount of destruction that occurred in Metropolis.
Batman '89 is well received and is considered as a good Batman film despite its tinkering with the mythology of the character. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are known to be among the worst superhero movies of all time. The Dark Knight Trilogy, 'nuff said about that. But Batman Returns grossed out viewers and fans alike as Tim Burton unleashed his macabre sensibility into Gotham City, with many pointing to Danny DeVito's Penguin as one of the main reasons the film wasn't as widely well received as its predecessor.
So FAN, which of these controversial films is better? Man of Steel or Batman Returns?

I'll say Batman Returns is the better of the 2. Man Of Steel misses the mark when it comes to portraying Superman. I felt like saying " here, try some Prozac already" Batman is meant to be down and dirty, and yeah to a degree scary, he's dealing with twisted psychopaths.

Batman Returns is at least interesting as a f***ed up Elseworld story featuring a couple of screwed up people like Bruce and Selina. Man of Steel is just taking a good origin story and trying to suck all the warmth and joy out of it.

Batman Returns, easily. It's not just dark; it's an entertaining film with plenty of humor to be found in its Tim Burton bizarreness, and just visually stunning.
Man of Steel is crappy Dark Knight leftovers, with a fraction of the trilogy's charm and a flanderization of its tone. It's no wonder some people are skeptical of the DCCU.

Batman Returns is awesome in a lot of ways, and the performances are awesomely over the top. Man of Steel just blows.

I love both for different reasons, but MoS is better just for the fact that it has a coherent plot. You may not LIKE that plot, but it has one. Returns has like four half baked ones.

Man of Steel just bored me. Maybe it was because I was on a plane and therefore in a bad mood, I guess I'll give it another chance someday.
Batman Returns is awesome though, and I don't give a shit how un-Batman-like it is.

Only one of these films has Christopher Walken saying the phrase "unlimited poontang."

Batman Returns, easily. There's still some redeeming value to Batman Returns, before that franchise fell off the deep end. Man of Steel just completely missed the mark.

I didn't even have to finish reading. I just automatically clicked on the one that wasn't Man Of Steel.

Batman Begins, easily. There's still some redeeming value to Batman Begins, before that franchise fell off the deep end. Man of Steel just completely missed the mark. I understand the confusion, but this is the movie the OP was referencing: And I feel it was better than Man of Steel. Man of Steel was ok but way to serious.

Batman Returns...it has a dark, weird tone, but that's Batman. This is the thing WB can't seem to figure out...the Nolan movies performed well because they were dark and Batman is meant to be so. Ergo, should not the other characters be true to themselves? Rather than all the characters conform to be like Batman?
This ignorance is sadly taking the TDK trilogy down with it, as it's the scapegoat for the fact that all DC movies must be dark, "realistic," and unofficially ban jokes or whatever the newz is now.
(Well that and after the trilogy ended, us fanboys can pick it apart after the rush of watching them is over, and see where they fell short. Bale's misuse of English as Bats for one)
That said, Batman Returns was what it was, like the first Burton movie. Except it was a Russo WWF/Russo WCW case in that the sequel was more unfiltered Tim Burton, merging the Batman mythos with horror. It too had discrepancies with the comics, obviously. And let us not forget that Keaton Bats had the lethal force problem Cavill Supes did. It seemed more acceptable for Batman, but still, Burton was harking back to a trope that died 50 years ago.

Batman Returns was funny, but Man of Steel was laughable for so many reasons.
Jonathan Kent's incredibly cliched and stupid death was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen on screen.

Batman Returns. I don't think it's a good movie by any stretch of the imagination: it has a very weak and mostly-absent protagonist, three or four half-formed plots that just don't go anywhere, and some incredibly iffy dialogue and acting, but it does have a certain charm to it. Plus it looks gorgeous and has a fantastic score.
Man of Steel has a tone that doesn't fit the story it's trying to tell, manages to make fight scenes between superpowered beings incredibly boring, makes it's sympathetic characters rather unlikeable, and drags so much it feels like it's four hours long.

I voted for Man of Steel. I didn't really hate Batman Returns or anything, but I get the feeling more people will vote for it over MoS just based off of nostalgia.

Way too different for me to pick one as "better". Plus, Batman Returns has a nostalgia factor that Man of Steel doesn't.
Absolutely never comprehended the hatred for MoS. Couple of dumb moments, sure, but I expect that in most superhero movies. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a comics reader, and thus didn't feel married to a particular vision for Superman, but I largely enjoyed it (theater I was in seemed to agree; film got applause at the end).
