I liked Batman Returns much more. I don't hate Man of Steel, but the problems are pronounced enough that I can't really do repeated viewings of it.
As far as both movies "messing up" their characters, I think the problem is far less a thing for Batman Returns. Batman 1989 already set up the fact that Burton Batman is a brutal badass who will kill you if you try to fight him...so see him acting like a brutal badass who will kill you if you try to fight him in Batman Returns was no big deal. Also, I kinda felt like the Burton movies made the change that makes sense...despite all Batfans not really wanting that change. What I mean is...no, none of us want to see Batman murder the hell out of villains...but in reality, to me, it makes more sense for him to do so. If the two people who are your whole life and mean more to you than anything else in the whole world are ruthlessly murdered before your very eyes...well...I kinda think a lot of people would want vengeance of some kind. "Kill my loved ones? I kill YOU." Bruce Wayne just takes it out on ALL crime rather than just the one guy (two if we count Bob the Goon in the movies) who did the deed. Also, the Burton movies followed the more evil and terrible villains of the modern age. Let's face it, the Romero Joker who just temporarily knocks people out with pink gas and steals their wallets doesn't really deserve to die. The Nicholson Joker was more than happy to kill anyone who just happened to use beauty products just for the sick thrill of it...yeah, he deserves to be beaten within an inch of his miserable life and killed off.
