The next day, December 4, Heyman and McMahon among those flying to Charleston, South Carolina, Heyman pitched opening the December 5 ECW show with Ariel and Kelly in a match, telling viewers interviews with Lashley, Van Dam, and Punk were going on right then and would be seen later in the show. McMahon didn’t like the idea, fearing fans in the arena would chant for Punk. Heyman asked why that was a bad thing, as it showed the fans cared about someone on the flagging ECW show. McMahon reportedly threw his glasses on the floor and shouted, “Get this through your thick f***ing head—my focus is on Bobby Lashley and only Bobby Lashley! That man is the brand's icon, the brand's superhero. He is ECW and he will be, at the expense of Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, Test, and everyone else, and you can hit the door if don't like it!”

Heyman left the company right after that PPV, didn't he? That teary eyed "I'm done" promo (done to acknowledge he was a beaten heel GM) aired after news of him leaving hit, I thought.

So I take it this was (at least one of a few) why he walked...

Really that whole show was pretty blatantly setting him up to fail. Don't know how on earth they expected anything other than a disaster having a PPV with only two matches announced in advance, one of which had one person subbed out for another much less over one and had a winner no one wanted, with the card made up of a bunch of has-beens and greenhorns in one case in a heel vs. heel match, coming the week after Survivor Series and in the middle of a time where between WWE and TNA there were something like five PPVs in six weeks was going to be anything other than an utter disaster.

Hunter was the beneficiary of one of those pushes, starting his WWF run with a winning streak, a slight lull while he put people over at the same level as he is, then a push to the upper midcard/main event level which saw him given Curt Hennig, Shawn Michaels, Rick Rude, the New Age Outlaws then Mick Foley selling like a beast for him to get him to the main event level. He was relentlessly pushed as the face of the company despite the fact business was tanking with him at the helm and has pushed for guys like Sheamus and Reigns to be pushed into that spot when they're not ready or wanted... He and Vince deserve oneanother.
