If Vince were an active wrestler his character's finishing moves would be, "The Tunnel Vision" and "Confirmation Bias."
Not really a shocker, this story, unfortunately.
At some point Vince decided he knew what viewers wanted more than the viewers did. He really began to buy into all the hype about what a smart guy he was for the Attitude Era ...or something. He sees himself as this master manipulator that can bend an audience to his will and make them cheer someone they don't like, but no one can do that.
I mean, getting little kids to cheer someone isn't hard, which is what happens with Reigns right now (though I'm sure he has a segment of legit adult fans as well - though not as many as WWE wants you to think) but when the average age of a RAW viewer is 41 years old, its not the kids you have to worry about pleasing.

What's worse is that he was pointing at Elijah Burke. You sir, take the prize!

What's worse is that he was pointing at Elijah Burke. And he meant The Boogeyman. Who he always thought was Shelton Benjamin in make up.

Vince made a similar quote to Heyman right before December to Dismember, when they were arguing about how the Elimination Chamber match was going to go. Heyman rightfully warned McMahon that the fans were going to slaughter them, but Vince was baffled and said (and I'm paraphrasing), "when the show is over the fans will have a new hero (Lashley) to cheer for."
Yeah, he really is clueless. I'd say he's always been clueless, but that's not being entirely accurate. I really do think most of the success of the 1980's WWF was his doing, because it was the one time in history his bizarre and laughable view of the world matched the American zeitgeist. Every success he's had since then has been due to others (Austin, Rock, Russo, Feffera, Kreski and even Ted Turner and Eric Bischoff, from a certain point of view) propping him up.

What's funny is, for as much as he loved Lashley, TNA ended up using him 100000x better than WWE ever did. And how many people can you honestly say that about? I know it's answering a rhetorical question (and veering off-topic), but I got Christian, Scott Steiner, Awesome Kong, arguably Tomko (for what use anyone got out of him)...

Vince has been acting like this for years. It just so happens that a majority of WWE fans at one point became smarks in the last few years. Yeah a few casual markets will cheer for Roman, but most will not cheer him our of principle now I think people really understate how over Roman is at the moment. Yes, he still has a decent bit of boos, and yes, the crowd's probably about to go back to booing him on a more wide scale what with how shitty the writing for him is and how they have learned seemingly nothing from the backlash he got earlier this year, but he's cheered more often than he's booed at the moment and typically gets the loudest pops on the roster. A bunch of kids cheering him in Nashville makes up for people just sitting on their hands as he won the title and lost it in 5 minutes?! To be over, you need a constant reaction. He does not get that yet. Show me a quieter reaction to someone winning the WWE title for the first time.

Is Hardcore History worth reading? I'm curious now if it covers the ECW on SciFi years. It's an easy read you can finish in 1 afternoon. The only mention of the SciFi stuff is towards the end and it only goes up to 2006 ONS and December to Dismember.

Yes, crowd was dead when he won the belt. Doesn't mean every crowd's dead for him and for that matter, they were probably just as much dead over how sudden and out of nowhere it was than anything. I mean, he most certainly can get a positive reaction under the right circumstances. Place cheered pretty decently when he speared Triple H.

I have always liked Lashley well enough but anyone with a quarter of a brain knew he was a terrible fit to be a top guy on ECW. At the end of the day he reeks of a WWE developmental guy that is getting pushed due to physique alone. If they had kept him on SD working with Booker, Regal, Finlay, etc. he would have been much better off.
