This movie is possibly the most triumphant example of a licensed property trying to do waaaaaaaay too much all at once and shoehorning ALL the characters. I also recall that for a brief time period after my friends and I watched it in high school, "Flaming ninjas that fall from the sky and kill people" became an inexplicably durable in-joke. That's a good point. Annihilation should have been part two of a trilogy. Have this movie focus on the conquest of Earth, and the return of Raiden at the very end for what everyone thinks will be the big save, only to be swerved as he had become mortal. The third movie is the group venturing into the other realm and ultimately restoring the balance or whatever.

Ermac being known as leftovers and Shao Khan killing his subordinates after doing good things like defeat Kabal & Stryker and leading the group straight to him

I do believe this was the starting point of a dark period for the entire franchise that didn't end until Deadly Alliance or so.
With that said, this film is a gem. Such lovely trash. I love how there's no other explanation for the Sub-Zero/Scorpion fight other than "Well, why not?"

The problem with Annihilation is the same problem with the Doctor Who TV movie. It pisses off fans by screwing up the lore (Raiden, Shao Khan and Shinnok being related, Jade betraying Kitana, Johnny Cage getting killed right at the start of the film) while confusing non-fans by throwing out things with no explanation (Scorpion returning, Smoke, Cyrax, Ermac, Mileena, Baraka and Noob Saibot never being mentioned by name, let alone an explanation of who they are). It's just a mess all round.

^The lore being completely wrong sticks out like a sore thumb considering that for the first movie, they pretty much had the lore spot on. (Really, the only thing that was a minor irk was Scorpion/Sub Zero working together). But Annihilation took said lore and chopped it in a blender as everything is completely off. They also tried way too hard in adding every Mortal Kombat reference they could. If you weren't familiar with the games, you'd have no idea who half of the characters are considering they show up with no build-up at all. (Another strength of the first movie, where they gave time to flesh out the character so you know who is who and what their role is). And the less said about the special effects, the better. (Though I did think Motoro looked quite awesome at the time.)
In short, while the first movie is fondly remembered, Annihilation is the drunken night out that you SO want to forget about the next day.
(Although Shao Kahn hamming it up in the film is worth a giggle.)

It still puzzles me that this one is on Netflix ,but not the first one for some reason. That first one was on there for the longest time. I sort of get the feeling that Netflix is trying to pull a fast one on us by having Annihilation up there and not the first one in the hopes that we wouldn't notice the difference. Well guess what, Netflex? Ya dun goofed because everybody can tell the difference. I just figure the licensing rights are likely way cheaper.

It's just hard to believe that those FX were as shit as they were even in the late Nineties. The entire movie is bad, but those visuals are just horrendous.

All I remember is the film killing off Johnny Cage (played by a different guy) to make Shao Kahn look strong. It might have also been due to Cage's actor in the games leaving Midway, so Cage's future as a character was already in doubt. Sometimes it's said he left due to a lawsuit, other times due to the infamous Bloodstorm ad, but either way, Johnny Cage had lost any importance to Midway at the time.

Killing off Cage in the opening scene was bad enough, but then I was looking forward to seeing how Kabal would be done, only for them to off-camera his death, and briefly mention it without ever seeing him.

Yeah, he'd been killed off between 2 and 3, pretty offhandedly, so this was one of the more accurate bits of the film.

Even worse: the didn't kill him. Kahn kills Rain for capturing Kabal and Stryker but not executing them. Usually that would set up a plot thread where we'd see them escape or something, especially in a movie where they cram everybody else in... But nope.

The only way to make it through this movie is with a strong buzz, as in a Steel Reserve 24 oz.
Johnny Cage and Raiden were by far the most memorable characters of the first film, so when they were replaced with different actors and killed off/revamped I knew it was going to be dreck. I always thought the gap between Raiden's front teeth in Annihalation was amusing for some reason or another, and how ridiculous it would be if he shot lightning from it.

I was under the impression that he was killed for not being sadistic enough, the whole "Did you make them beg for their lives before killing them?" thing. On that note, let's not forget that Rain technically died twice since they used him falling into the fire pit to show BARAKA of all characters falling into the fire pit.

Another thing that gets me is the Sub Zero and Scorpion bit. Scorpion reappears with no explanation, Sub Zero shows up (at least he explains the he's the original Sub Zero's brother), they fight, Scorpion grabs Kitana and teleports away, Sub Zero vows to go after him...and neither Sub Zero or Scorpion are seen again.

I shamelessly love every terrible frame of this horrible movie. Any movie where a guy does 100 front flips down a staircase just to finish a sentence is alright in my books.
