Even though the SFX are admittedly impressive, 2012 is almost -too- much "Hey, come look at this" to really work for me. It's one of those "Desensitization of scale" things in a way. Even Armageddon did a better job of spacing out the money shots. I love it when the movie does a build to something like Volcano did, it wasn't BOOM VOLCANO no they built up to it.

Even Armageddon did a better job of spacing out the money shots. As a pure, dramatic disaster film it's nonsense. It appeals to me as a highlight reel of destruction. That being said, as much as I can let the scientific inaccuracies go for most of the other disasters portrayed in the film (about 85% of them couldn't possibly happen as portrayed), the Yellowstone eruption sequence really annoys me.

I was literally about to comment on that. There's only so much scientific bollocks you can ignore in a film before you break your willing suspension of disbelief and it just becomes distracting. I had the same problem with The Day After Tomorrow. (Running away from the freezing, anyone?)
On the topic of pacing, Dante's Peak also does a good job IMO.

THE TOWERING INFERNO would have to be mine. POSIDEON ADVENTURE, DEEP IMPACT, DANTE'S PEAK, EARTHQUAKE and most recently SAN ANDREAS follow. Does Independence Day count? Like, the first hour goes. It stops when the dog lives, though.

Yeah, scientific iannaccuracies ruin movies for me. The Core? 2012? The Dau After Tomorrow? All were impossible to ignore. Hell, I almost could not enjoy Armageddon, and that was chock full or Bruce Willis awesomeness!
