I just can't see 1 as anything but awful. Again, it has a few cool moments, but it's just so completely cold and inhuman in its presentation. Even Qui-Gon, usually the most liked character, is largely directionless. Even 3, which is admittedly better than the first two, just has moments unsupported by much emotional investment, unless you're already committed to expanded universe or additional promotional stuff that could give you some level of connection that the movies themselves really didn't provide.

Having seen them again recently, I actually think Attack of the Clones is much worse than Phantom Menace. Hell even as a kid when both came out, I remember having a good time seeing Episode 1, but feeling Episode 2 dragged on.

I HAVE to ask the fellow nerds on here: why did we all force ourselves to believe these (especially the first one) were good movies? It is widely accepted the prequels were bad now, but I would say 90% of people after they saw it in '99 loved it (me included). They are not good, not even close, but my god, most of us just lived in pure denial. These movies were not even good on a structural level. They lacked dialogue, actor chemistry, a proper climax, and so much more. I wouldn't say 90% liked them after they first came out. I know the day after they opened everyone at the LCS hated episode 1. And people outside the comic shop were split pretty much 50/50. Seems the only group that loved it when it first came out was kids.

They stunk.
You were so jacked up about MOAR Star Wars at the time, so you went with it. If they didn't piss you off then, they did when you rewatched them.
It's interesting though that Star Wars is quite possibly the most critically dissected, cross-examined anything. It's fans go way too hard.
That's why Lucas hates it and gets so pissy when fans say GTFO to his impossibly busy yet somehow impossibly wooden and boring CGI porn trilogy.
All movies have good points, they're just tucked away behind a mess of nonsense that could have easily been ironed out with rewrites or *gasp* another pair of hands.

Me: "George, why couldn't the Jedi testify that Naboo had been invaded?"
Lucas: "...."
Prequel Defender: "Well if you read (expanded universe book) and check (encyclopedic reference website) it clearly states that...."

For me it was simple: I was a god damn kid who had just came off of seeing the late 90s special edition re-releases of the Original Trilogy, so I was hype as hell for Star Wars.

I think there were at least some people who convinced themselves to like them because we never want to see something we were really looking forward too turn out to be terrible, then have reality set in later. Obviously there are people who legitimately like them and people who thought they sucked form the start, but I think there are always people who want to end up seeing things more positively from the start than they do at the end.

What you mean WE kemosabe? My point being is A LOT of Star Wars fans were trying to convince themselves the movies were good, when they were not. I just used that video as a reference. A lot of the people in it later said they hated the prequel

I dunno if it's been mentioned because thus thread won't load right for me but the President of the Star Wars Fan Club in North America quit his post after seeing TPM.

I was one of those people in denial at first. It didn't dawn on me until about an hour after how bad Phantom Menace was. I'm amazed when people say Attack of the Clones was worse. Phantom had Jar Jar, Boss Nass, Nute Gunray and the boring as hell trade disputes, Jake Loyd's terrible acting, midichlorians, Vader making 3PO and action climax that was nothing but window dressing for JarJar's slapstick, even the good scenes were ruined by stupidity like the pod race announcer, Darth Maul just watching Obi Wan jump and cut him in two.
Attack of the Clones had those exciting assassination attempts in the beginning, the chase through Coruscant, the Obi Wan Jango fight, and a much better climax with Yoda vs Dooku, the monster pit, and that huge droid/clone battle. Sure there was stupid stuff like that chef, the lame romance, R2 flying but there was enough good to offset the bad.
The Clone Wars was awesome at least.

Didn't like the first two, but I can say I liked Revenge of the Sith without being in denial.

I loved Qui Gon and Darth Maul as concepts,if they had a bigger involvement on the next movies,i think that would made the situation better.
The Clone Wars cartoon made em love Grievous, the movie ruined him so i never liked it.
But i did like the scene where Obi Wan and Anakin fight

The idea of a bad Star Wars film was a foreign concept to people at the time. So when the Phantom Menace came out, people were kind of in a daze. There were plenty of space battles and lightsaber fights, so it was enough to distract us for a short time.

Episode 1 has always been terrible on every level (with the sole exceptions of the score and *maybe* the podracing). Only Star Wars obsessives are apologists for that film and have to come up with "it's decent for a kids' movie" as a response. I'm like "Dog, kids movies aren't about tariff disputes."
Even as an overzealous pre-teen I hated Episode 1 in theaters, so much so that I never saw Episodes 2 or 3 as nobody could ever recommend them to me without a qualifier.
But as to the OP (which is an incredible find with that clip) of course people who took the time to dress as Darth Maul or an impressionable child or someone with the prospect to be on television is going to say that they loved the movie, especially if they've been camping for days upon days to see it.

It wasn't even just those super die hards. Even Roger Ebert gave the film a glowing review, it's weird seeing some of the early reactions in hindsight.

The Clone Wars cartoon made em love Grievous, the movie ruined him Wow, is that ever accurate! Of course, the end of TV series explains away an important aspect of how he was defeatable in the film, but most didn't see the wonderful series, and it makes me feel like a loner for being such a Grievous mark while the film depicts him as "just another bad guy that gets beat."

Pretty much this. They do "try" in the movie by showing him coughing. But they end up making him look like just an Old Man Cyborg. The Cartoon has a whole series about how Grievous is the most dangerous fighter of the Dark Side, and how he was wounded by a (lucky?) shot at the lungs made him defeated. I'm sucha HUGE mark for him too,and him just being destroyed by Obi Wan was...very underwhelming
