I HAVE to ask the fellow nerds on here: why did we all force ourselves to believe these (especially the first one) were good movies? It is widely accepted the prequels were bad now, but I would say 90% of people after they saw it in '99 loved it (me included).
They are not good, not even close, but my god, most of us just lived in pure denial. These movies were not even good on a structural level. They lacked dialogue, actor chemistry, a proper climax, and so much more.

OK then
TPM - Liam Neeson was fantastic as Qui Gon. A pointless character, I agree but still good. Frankly he was more like what I thought a jedi would be, than all the rest of them, especially Mace Windu (he sucked, stop giving Samuel a pass!) and Yoda.
Darth Maul was a great new Sith. He look great and every scene he was in worked and worked well. He should not have been killed off though. He should have killed Qui Gon and bailed.
Jar Jar wasnt that bad....(dodges flames) I thought he was funny and I liked the Gungan city.

I actually think Revenge of the Sith is better than Force Awakens (keep in mind, I still liked TFA)

I liked Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith to some degree. Phantom Menace was the only one I thought was out and out bad. Sure Episodes II and III have plenty of flaws, but they're still entertaining.

After watching them to get ready for the new one, I can honestly say they're not as bad as people make them out to be. Jarjar sucks because you can't understand a word he says half the time. Clones wasn't as boring as I remembered, and I've liked Revenge.

We didn't all do and think that, and some people do like the prequels. You can't just say that people who like them are wrong or deluding themselves.

Because on a structural level they ARE pretty good. It's when you put them next to the original trilogy that their flaws stand out more.
At worst, they're just mediocre. It's not denial.

I saw TPM a number of times in theatres. It was Star Wars and the only way for me to get my fix while waiting for what would hopefully be a better second film.
With that said, I cannot emphasize enough how much my heart dropped after the opening crawl for Episode I...and when Nute Gunray spoke. To quote a franchise, "I have a bad feeling about this..."

No, a lot of Star Wars hated the prequels even back then. Don't tell me otherwise, I know from being around boards in the early 2000s.

No, a lot of Star Wars hated the prequels even back then. Don't tell me otherwise, I know from being around boards in the early 2000s. Yes, I remember the first 2 prequels were more disliked than liked. Although I think more people liked Episode 3, simply because it was the best of the prequels.

This is the first I've heard of fans forcing themselves to like the prequels.

I can remember pretty well: I walked out of all three prequels saying "Ok...that was pretty good!", until I then had a few days to digest them and possibly see them again. At that point, my brain kind of went "Oh...oooh. That was bad."
I think a big part of it was the effect of hype before the films came out. I was 14 when Phantom Menace appeared on the scene; I had been into Star Wars, big time, since age 10, and I had spent the previous four years watching the old movies, getting excited over the special editions, buying toys or asking for them as gifts, being subscribed to a fan magazine, and reading book after book after book in the Expanded Universe.
This meant that I got tons of exposure to The Phantom Menace before it came out, so I learned some of the characters' names, got some products with their faces on it, heard the soundtrack, read bits of the novelization, etc. This meant that once I saw it, I'd let the warm glow of the pre-release hype carry me through, combined with my relative youth and just sheer overwhelming desire to see a new Star Wars on screen. I still bought some products, basically told myself "no, this is fine! The lightsaber scene was cool!", all the while ignoring that my entire justification for the film was "some of the standalone moments were cool" while glossing over the vast majority of the rest of it.
The same thing happened with the next two. I was 17 for Episode II, 21 for Episode III; each time, I'd just say to myself "Hey, this was darker than Phantom Menace, it had cool moments, I love Christopher Lee, Vader suit reveal was cool until "NOOOO!", blah blah blah. Thing was, though, I wasn't as huge a fan by that point as I had used to be, and my ability to let the hype train, my youth, and my huge fandom carry me through wasn't there anymore. I can't keep saying "this individual moment was cool!" while ignoring "wow, I couldn't care less about the rest of this movie".
I still own the prequels on DVD...but that's largely so I can listen to the Rifftrax for them.

I came out of TPM and ROTS as good and satisfied with my movie going experience. No way in hell did I think Attack of the clones was good even at the time

I never thought they were good.
I imagine that many people who liked them were just caught up in the excitement of seeing new SW movies for the first time in decades.

Keep in mind they do lots of interviews and choose the best ones to air on TV or ones that fit the narrative.

At the time I enjoyed them because I was a kid. I rewatched them recently and think...
1 - Bad but there is a decent movie hidden amongst the crap. Unfortunately there is too much crap with cardboard Padme, young Anakin, Jar-Jar, the dull crap trade disputes and sanctions, the poor dialogue etc. The plot could have been good, Qui-Gon is an excellent character, Maul was great and the action scenes are mostly quite fun. I think the major mistake was having Anakin as a kid. He should have been the same age as Luke.
2 - Shit. Just an utter, incoherent mess. Too many plotholes, some of the worst scenes in the series, not much of a story and having the Jedi as such a huge, sprawling organisation was a mistake considering they were considered a myth in the original series. They should have been like a super-secret black ops group with nobody knowing for sure if they exist or not. Only thing I liked was Count Dooku and seeing Yoda battle. I guess the end battle was fun too.
3 - Excellent. I still enjoy it today.
