Found it ridiculous at their Night of Champions match that the IC title wasn't on the line.

Punk didn't need the title for the angle they were doing. I don't see what makes him an asshole there. Punk was charging at Heyman and Lesnar, what happens when he's IC Champ? He loses to Lesnar at SummerSlam in a non-title match? How does that help the title? What's the logical next jumping point in the story if Punk has the IC title? That's how you have to look at this stuff.

Must have just thought it and forgot to type it.

That's how you have to look at this stuff. Punk just wanted to kick Heyman's ass for turning his back on him. He had no beef with Lesnar apart from Brock being a guy in the way of him beating up Heyman. The Axel stuff happened after the Lesnar match. And since Punk was decisively, well, punking Axel out at every turn, there's no reason why he couldn't have done it for the belt, especially since he was just doing nothing except being on TV for no reason other than being too big to leave off the show.

I don't mind the recent Punk bashlashing. It is a lot better than it was in 2012 when you couldn't say a single bad word about him without everyone attacking you for saying Punks name in vain.

This was symptom of the bigger issue for this feud. The whole thing was backwards and illogical. Heyman turns his back on Punk, and fearing reprisal, brings out Brock Lesnar and they have a match at Summerslam. Punk is able to get his hands of Heyman, but this costs him the match and Lesnar wins.
Punk still wants more vengeance (even though the emergence of the Authority should really bug him and would be the most logical way of ending this), but Lesnar is just...not there, so instead of having Heyman put forth obstacles of increasing difficulty, they do the blowoff match first, and then extend the rivalry in the stupidest way imaginable, making everyone involved look really stupid.

Dean Ambrose's Phantom Reign of the US title is the most egregious case of the title just not f***ing being defended, ever, that I can think of. He defended the damned thing monthly. they just didn't put any story behind it but it was defended. That's not true. He didn't defend it at all between October '13 and February '14.

It's an HHH thing.
I don't mean this as HHHate, I just mean that due to how the HHH character operated, and since he was a main eventer for so long, we constantly had his "NO TITLE MATTERS EXCEPT THE BIG ONE!" mantra repeatedly shoved down our throat for years.
WWE conditioned everyone that only one belt mattered; to go for the lower-tier ones was lowering yourself and resigning yourself to never being a main eventer.
So with that being the narrative that WWE itself kept pushing, why would a guy like Punk, who wanted to be _THE_ Man, go after a "lower" belt?

He's either a better person than Jesus ever was or worse than Hitler. It's like he's some kind of cult of personality. Frankly, I always found CM Punk more akin to Josef Stalin and Gandhi.

Not excusing Punk, but he's not the first with a "LOL midcard belt" mentality. Thankfully this year did take a step in finally moving away from that mindset.

It's happened before. Orton vs. Cody Rhodes, Punk vs. Axel, probably a bunch of Cena matches, etc. Stone Cold outright forfeited the title in storyline because he wanted the WWE title, but he did it in a pretty cool way, though.

Guys...Punk didn't write his storyline. But by that point, he had enough pull to say something.

WWE's history of treating midcard belts like garbage is well-established.

Guys...Punk didn't write his storyline. But by that point, he had enough pull to say something. Say what? "Let me take the belt off this rising midcarder, simply because we're in a storyline together."? I mean, who benefits from Punk wasting his time with the IC title when his main focus was with Heyman? And while he didn't amount to much, Axel at least deserved a decent length title reign that wasn't ended by a superstar that showed no interest in the title to begin with.

If Punk didn't want to win the title, they could've let Axel successfully retain the title against him, OR Punk and Axel shouldn't have been having matches together.

Better yet, speed up the Cesaro as a Heyman guy and then we get CM Punk vs. Cesaro. That would be 1000% better as a feud.

Guys...Punk didn't write his storyline. But by that point, he had enough pull to say something. I think people overestimate how much 'pull' big stars who aren't John Cena have, or at least how often they use it. Unless a storyline is going to make you or someone you want to be on your level look bad, why bother making a fuss? Plus, it's not really Punk's responsibility to protect the integrity of the midcard belts when no one in the company at the time seemed to care.
